1949 Overview (age 62 from March 16): Acting as matron at Andover Town Infirmary. Mr. Duval died. Mary suffering periodic headaches so terrible that she couldn't get out of bed. Diagnosed as having hypertension and arthritis in neck. Also periodic bouts with laryngitis. Took courses in Personality and Personal Appearance from library. Visited friends in Florida and on the way home visited son Ernest John Edmands and daughter-in-law Marguerite Phyllis "Peggy" Bailey Edmands, in Norfolk, VA. Granddaughter Ernestine "Tina" J. Edmands, daughter of son Ernest John and daughter-in-law Peggy, born (as part of the Boom Generation) in Norfolk, Norfolk County, Virginia. Aunt Fanny (Frances Cummerford Findley), widow of Uncle Richard Findley, died on March 12 in New Haven, CT, at the age of 89. Mary visited her just before she died: "Went down to see Aunt Fannie on Feb 24 and stayed only a few minutes. Her funds are all gone. Is in ward at Grace Hospital. Nothing but skin and bone. Knew me but hurts to talk. Suffers terribly." Randall M. Kinville, son of niece Dorothy May "Dot" Edmands Kinville, 29 (daughter of brother-in-law Nelson Wilfred Edmands and late sister-in-law Alice E. Blaney Edmands) and her husband, Ronald George Kinville, born. 1949

Saturday, January 1, 1949 (age 61): Didn't get these books till the 14th so can't tell day by day events. Weather has been good for 2 weeks--no snow though threatening. Mr. Duval celebrated the New Year by messing and Arthur Cole got him into Tewksbury on Jan. 11 I had a raging headache the next day & felt guilty but Jean said he was getting too much for her & Dr. Look said it was the place for him.

Wednesday, January 12, 1949 (age 61): Went down & had State Income Tax man to fix up blank & he said if I got another one to tear it up. Have sent in Federal Statement.

Thursday, January 13, 1949 (age 61): Went to Law. & got housedress in Newberry's. $1.97. Also pin in Sutherlands. The diaries were too high so got these blank books.

Sunday, January 16, 1949 (age 61): J.,R. & JA went to Framingham & JA was sick & threw up he told me the next day.

Monday, January 17, 1949 (age 61): Cloudy & a little rain but warm. Peggy's birthday. Sent her some padded hangers I got in Jordan's basement. Got letter from Minerva with newsp. pictures of College Club recept. JA sick.

Tuesday, January 18, 1949 (age 61): Eleanor Lovely's birthday. Sent her a card. Letter about Aunt Fan.

Wednesday, January 19, 1949 (age 61): Got 2 chicken pies & took them up to Carters & we had supper. Lucy went to South Ch. I went down to personality class at Library. Guess I'll join. Got a letter from Janie & they are practically snowbound. Wrote to her.

Thursday, January 20, 1949 (age 61): Tel. Belle Paul about Aunt Fannie's being sick. JA's cold seems to hang on. Nose stuffed up so he doesn't breathe very well. Not much sleep. * William Higgins died.

Friday, January 21, 1949 (age 61): Jennie's bed slat fell & in trying to get it back all fell out. Mannie kind of mad as I was trying to help. Tore dress on catch on door of Jennie's room. I'm as awkward as an old cow. Trying to snow, but pretty cold. Annie & Duval sisters went to see McD.

Saturday, January 22, 1949 (age 61): * Mr. Duval died in afternoon. R. took the sisters & Annie over to Tewksbury but they said he'd gone. R's birthday. Gave him $2. They went up to Johnsons in evening.

Sunday, January 23, 1949 (age 61): Went to church & in pm went over to Eva's. Mamie, Sydney, Joe & Alec went to Higgins funeral. I did some telephoning to neighbors & friends of Mr. D. to let them know. Tried to get Minerva but not home. A little more snow in even.

Monday, January 24, 1949 (age 61): Nellie telephoned & wanted R. to take George over to Dr. Byrne next Tuesday.

Tuesday, January 25, 1949 (age 61): Cloudy & fine snow. Mr. Duval's funeral from Lundgren's. I tel.Minerva & asked her to come but to send a card anyway so she wrote a note to Annie. A. & Mamie contributed $3.00 to flowers & J. Hunter gave 50¢. They thought A. & M. that I should have asked before but I was trying to save them money. Can't please people any way I do things. Tel. to Lauries & J. Poland & Masons sent flowers. Mr. D. had on Masons bib & medal. Not many there, but flowers were nice. Jean went to DAR afterwards but felt sick with cold. JA been in for nearly 2 weeks. Little Joe Caruso sick. Jean went to DAR.

Wednesday, January 26, 1949 (age 61): Jean not feeling good, nervous headache after all the fuss. Went to Personality meet. & paid $5. She told us about diets. Snow.

Thursday, January 27, 1949 (age 61): Snow & rain but warm so didn't freeze much. Made doughnuts & sent Nellie down some. Got supper & Jean went to sewing class.

Friday, January 28, 1949 (age 61): Nellie Carter's birthday. I sent card to her & also wrote a big letter to Virginia yesterday & Roland lost the letter somewhere. Rain. Went to Thrift Shop in pm & supper at Carters. Took some icecream. Miss Ryder there. Got check for $11.60 rebate on salary tax. Gave Mrs Kimball who worked at Thrift Shop $5.40 for some things as she hadn't any money with her. Sent card to V. telling her about Mr. Duval.

Saturday, January 29, 1949 (age 61): Fair. Got letter from Duval sisters thanking folks for flowers & espec. Jean & Roland for what they had done for Mr. D. Card from Mrs. Thornton saying glad Mr. D. & Mr. Higgins gone. Got gold star pin from Navy after waiting so long. Got package of feed bags & box of nylon thread that I sent for.

Sunday, January 30, 1949 (age 61): Dr. Currier came to see Jimmie & ordered him to hosp. R. took him.

Monday, January 31, 1949 (age 61): Snow. R. & J. went over to see Jimmie. I stayed with JA. They went to movies after.

Tuesday, February 1, 1949 (age 61): Wrote to Jimmie's daughter in No.Billerica. J. & R. & JA went to Malden. Jean had hairdo.

Wednesday, February 2, 1949 (age 61): Clear & cold. Went to Personality class & they did exercises but I couldn't do them on acct of arm. Got diets & am going to try to 4day one.

Thursday, February 3, 1949 (age 61): Clear. Tried to stay on diet but it was hard as I get hungry. Drink apple juice when I can. J. & R. went over to see J. Douglas & find that they will have to operate on foot. Has diabetes.

Friday, February 4, 1949 (age 61): Had hair washed & stayed at Carters a while. R. took Mamie over to see Jimmie. His daughter telephoned & me from No. Bellerica & wanted me to get the priest to go over & see him so tel. Father Smith. J. & R. went to basketball game at Punchard between P. & Cent Cath who won by 1 point. Big crowd there.

Saturday, February 5, 1949 (age 61): Snow. Sydney's birthday. Jean made him a cake.

Sunday, February 6, 1949 (age 61): Went to ch. & then to Univ. of Life at South Ch. in even. Sandwiches & coffee first. Broke diet to have them but was most through anyway.

Monday, February 7, 1949 (age 61): Mamie's birthday. Jean sick so I made a cake with cake mix. Jimmie was operated on & his toes removed on right foot.

Tuesday, February 8, 1949 (age 61): Jean got up but shouldn't. I went to DAR meeting & took notes for her. Was invited to Rectory to Thrift Shop tea but couldn't go.

Wednesday, February 9, 1949 (age 61): Didn't go to Person. class as Jean was feeling worse. Had Dr. Currier & he said virus pneumonia.

Thursday, February 10, 1949 (age 61): R. worked with Guy Howe at Paige's on Salem street to get heater in till 3 Friday morning. Got up again and worked all day Friday & was all in. So am I but that's nothing. Jean Wood here extra.

Friday, February 11, 1949 (age 61): Letter from Mary with snaps of the plays Chris & Butch were in. Went down with letter in pm re George Bursley who used to be here to Arthur Cole. Made doughnuts for food sale for DAR. They made over $37.00. Took payroll down.

Saturday, February 12, 1949 (age 61): Fair. Went down to Carters & found George in bed. Couldn't get up but doctor said not a shock. Felt fine the day before. Nellie all worked up.

Sunday, February 13, 1949 (age 61): Had roast pork for dinner. Jean still in bed & if she does get up feels miserable. Went over to see Jimmie at hospital for a few minutes. Took JA & I stayed with him while Roland visited Jimmie.

Monday, February 14, 1949 (age 61): Got valentines from J. & JA. Sent some to all the grands last week.

Tuesday, February 15, 1949 (age 61): Paid MacDonnells for skirt. Cloudy & rain.

Wednesday, February 16, 1949 (age 61): Letter from Ethel & Minnie. Accepted invitation to Gold Star Mothers Tea on Feb 27 but don't know as I can go. Got 2 complimentary tickets for G.T.S. Breakfast in Hollywood.

Thursday, February 17, 1949 (age 61): Pretty good weather--some rain.

Friday, February 18, 1949 (age 61): [all written in later; the following "dated" February 18, but events happened later.] Routine stuff. Jean Wood had to go to hospital on Feb 15 and I got Mrs. Tammany to come in the next week to help Mannie & Jean on Wed & Sat. Jean feeling better & she & R. went to Follies on Feb 21. George Carter has ups & downs not getting better. Got a letter from Mrs. O'Connell at Aunt Fannie's & she said " was in hospital& not expected to live. Called up Jesse West about Findley lot & he went down & got records. Grandpa Findley's name not on record. Told him about it. Went down to see Aunt Fannie on Feb 24 & stayed only a few minutes. Sunday, March 20, 1949 (age 62): Went over to Center Ch. home & helped Mrs. Howard, the matron, to tie up boxes. Miss Bronson took us both to N.H. Country Club to dinner & she & I had supper on her kitchen table.

Monday, March 21, 1949 (age 62): Started for Florida. Woman on train to Wash. gabbed a lot but was pleasant & gave me part of her lunch. Got seat on Silver Meteor but should have gone on Atlantic Coast Line as I wouldn't have had to change in Jacksonville. Sent tele. to Ethel & she & Minnie & Miss K met me. They had been down to 3 trains. Took me over to Daytona Beach & I paddled. Flowers out & trees in leaf. Hot but cool at night.

Rebecca Dea came down on morning train to stay a week. I stayed with Miss K. while Minnie & Ethel went up to meet Rebecca. First time they have been together without her since they came to Florida.

Tuesday, March 29, 1949 (age 62): Tried to pay for room but Mrs. Williams said all settled for. Gave Minnie $10 to help out anyway. Left at 10 pm for Richmond.

Wednesday, March 30, 1949 (age 62): Two stations there. Had Travelers Aid telephone to other station & page John & he happened to have just come in. Waited about ½ hour & he & family appeared. Carla & Margo hugged me & Margo called me Glammer. John & Peg both looked tired. Drove back with them 120 miles & my knees ached. Went to shop while Peg cleaned up house. A lovely lot of stores. Slept in Carla's bed.

Thursday, March 31, 1949 (age 62): Good eats. P. is good cook. Went to see azalia gardens. Beautiful. Peg played piano at night. J. & I played cards. Went over to see John's office and it is quite a place.

Friday, April 1, 1949 (age 62): Got train from Norfolk to Richmond which went on to Washington. Had lunch & then called Mrs. Johnstone. Couldn't find name & then remembered it was spelled with e. Must have left address book in station as I couldn't find it when I got home. Went over to Johnstones & stayed till 9.30 when I got cab back to station. Met a young lady there who was going to be a missionary in Africa. Got Federal to Boston. Not much sleep.

Saturday, April 2, 1949 (age 62): Got to Boston at 8.30, got suitcase I'd sent up from Daytona & paid 25¢ charge for keeping it overtime. Got 10.13 train out to Andover & called up & R. met me. Pretty tired.

Sunday, April 3, 1949 (age 62): Jean got up & got breakfast & cooked dinner & then they went to beach.

Monday, April 4, 1949 (age 62): Had shampoo & paid cemetery bill & the one of $5 for burial of Aunt F.'s ashes. Sorted out stuff in boxes. Gave Annie Colange 2 dresses & 2 pr stockings. Took jewelry in to Billings for appraisal. Called on Nellie & said Hello. George in bed.

Tuesday, April 5, 1949 (age 62): Took JA for a walk & we took 2 sweaters down to Nellie. Beautiful day. At M. Wilkinson in eve. after I'd gotten to 2 pc. dress from Rhodes Partridge shop.

Wednesday, April 6, 1949 (age 62): Poured all day. Windy too. Jean & JA went to Boston to get some shoes for JA. R. drove them in & Alec Smith who had to go to Olive.

Thursday, April 7, 1949 (age 62): Lovely day again. Jonquils almost out. Having quite a time wondering what to do with J. Douglas.

Friday, April 8, 1949 (age 62): Worked in Thrift Shop & lost hat & bag which had 2 town bills in it. Bag came in Aunt Fannie's things. Hunted all over but such a raft of things came in to be sold couldn't find it.

Saturday, April 9, 1949 (age 62): Went down to Carters in even. & wore Nellie's old hat home. George played 2 games of cards.

Sunday, April 10, 1949 (age 62): My day on & in eve. Jean & R. took JA to Palm Sunday service of dedication of organ. Took Annie Solange & Sadie Elliot.

Monday, April 11, 1949 (age 62): Fine day. Got ring (marquisite) from Billings & it was only $1.25 to fix it. Watch is fixed & the pearl ring is being fixed. Wedding ring brought $2.50 selling it. K.D. in even.

Tuesday, April 12, 1949 (age 62): Jean & I went to Mrs. Hathaway's to DAR meet. Had Jean Wood stay in pm. Jean & R. went to Law in even & bought shoes. Eclipse of moon.

Wednesday, April 13, 1949 (age 62): Got watch & pearl beads at Billings. Went to movies but stayed only through one picture. Fire in lot next to Arnold's. I called dept. & H. Pomeroy & one of the Deyermonds came & put it out. Rained in night which helped.

Friday, April 15, 1949 (age 62): Went up to M. Wilkinson's in even. Cold. Sent night letter to Mary yesterday asking if all right.

Tuesday, April 26, 1949 (age 62): Jean calling a lot of nurses but couldn't get anyone. Finally Wed. Miss Edna Nutton of Shawsheen came up & said it was the kind of place she wanted. Graduate of Children's Hospital.

Tuesday, May 3, 1949 (age 62): JA's 4th birthday. Gave him a puzzle & record. Jean had a party for him but I went downtown in forenoon & got some bills & went to movies in pm. It rained hard during day.

Wednesday, May 4, 1949 (age 62): Carla's 5th birthday. Sent her & Margo some pencils in big " box. Put $5 each for her & M. & JA in bank yesterday. Hot.

The funeral will be held from the Lundgren funeral home with a Mass of requiem in St. Augustine's church, Andover. Further arrangements will be announced later. J. He was a member of the Holy Name society of St. Joseph's parish, and Andover post 8, American Legion. He was formerly employed at the Andover Townsman. Surviving besides his wife, Alice, who is organist at St. Joseph's church, are a daughter, Jane; two sisters, Miss Stella Dumont and Mrs. Irene Beaulieu, both of Ballardvale and two brothers, George of Ballardvale and Louis of Wakefield. The funeral will be held from the family home Monday morning with a solemn high Mass of requiem in St. Augustine's church at 9:30 o'clock. Burial will be in St. Augustine's cemetery.

She was telling how worked up Nellie was over Russell's trying to have them sell the house & take the apt. in the Arco building. Had card from John about birth of 3rd daughter named Ernestine. Sent him & Peg a note & a dollar in it. Went over to Law. on 12th & sent Peg a box of diapers from Hiscox. Got 3 "StoryBook Dolls" for Carla, Margo & Janna. Also bought some wire for my old hat I've blocked over. Wrote to Ethel.

Ate some peanuts & they disagreed with me & I was all achy like the grip & had to stay in bed.

Monday, November 14, 1949 (age 62): Got up on the 15th because Jean had to go to Boston to have an impacted wisdom tooth out. Jean Wood came to help out. Jean's face is badly swollen & very painful. I got up & got breakfast today (16) & made the dinner. Jean stayed in bed 3 days. Got up Sat. Nov 19 & had to go to dentist's in pm. Letter from Christine on 18th. I ordered cheese sent from those places in Wisconsin to Mary, John, & Minerva & Paul & Virginia. Sent away for magazine for JA. Got Christmas Club money & put 25 in bank. Called Mrs. Howe up about boxes & then called Mrs Donovan on 19th & she had been so busy, but will take the cartons down to her. Went to Smorgasbord supper at South Church. Bought sweater & booties for Ernestine & baby oil & pds, Necktie for Roland that Alice Johnson painted. Dr. Stearns died Nov 15. Will Trow died Nov 18. Irving Shaw died Nov 18.

Began to snow during Sun. so didn't go out. Came home Monday. Stopped off in New York & looked around--got dinner at automat. Got 12 oc. train up to Boston arriving at 4,30. Had a bite at Jordan's. Not as good as automat.

Wednesday, November 30, 1949 (age 62): Heard from Edie that Nelson wasn't well. Went down with Roland on Thurs eve. & found him in bed but cheerful. However, Dot said they were taking him to a cancer specialist which they did & found it was cancer on lung. Milton flew in from California but could stay only over the weekend. He went back Dec. 5. Came up here with Sonny's wife' & stayed to dinner. Jean & R. went down there Sunday Dec. 4 & Jean was sick on Sunday night & Monday 24 hr grip. Mamie came down on Monday pm but got up Tues a.m. Mrs. William Frye here as an inmate. She's very lame but may get down to meals except breakfast, Milton had a few tales to tell about seeing A. & J. [Allan and John] in war. Was by the Astoria when it broke in two. Was on the convoy of the Franklin also. He was planning to go back Dec. 5 but tel. the doctor & he said it would be foolish, so Mit tel. his wife to come on which she did. Took Nelson to hospital to be operated on Dec. 10.

Wednesday, December 21, 1949 (age 62): Started to cough a little & thought nothing of it, but Friday 23 it was rainy. I went into Andover Market & ordered basket for Nellie & G. & then up to Eva's & talked with her. Had rubbers on but must have got more cold as I was wheezy & choking Sat. a.m. so Jean called Dr. He said it was a nasty laryngitis & I had to take medicine, rub on musterole & breathe in stuff.

Saturday, December 24, 1949 (age 62): Had stuff all out for folks Christmas so they had a good time. I laid in bed & heard them. Johnny played records & Jean gave them tonic & cakes. The Nov. Club brought in cakes & icecream on Friday so had some left. Gave Mamie a watch & she cried when she opened it in her room. Had Annie over for dinner on Dec 25. All the men were out at supper so didn't get any but Jennie had a cup of tea & toast & Mrs Frye also. Everyone well remembered.

Jerry Grant back here for a week--paid for but he can't seem to let booze alone. Letter of thanks from Mary. I wrote all my thank-you letters. Can't seem to get rid of cough. Got pkg. from Jerry, beautiful silk scarf. It was sent spec. del. on Dec 23 from Boston but must have gotten mixed up with mail for Calif. for it had a Los Angeles stamp on it Dec 26. Jean & R. went to Masonic supper & dance in N.A. with the Johnsons.
