| 1945 Overview (age 58 from March 16): Son Allan Christie Edmands I, Lieutenant Commander in the U.S. Navy, skipper of Torpedo Squadron 5, killed in action on the U.S.S. Franklin near Kyushu, Japan, at the age of 33 years 9 months and 9 days. Daughter-in-law Mary Anna Hawes Edmands, 28, suffered severe breakdown and "gave away" her youngest child, infant granddaughter Anna Jane "Janna" Edmands, to her then friend and sister-in-law Margery Jane "Janie" Doyle Hawes, 30. Grandson John Allan Weeks, son of daughter Ethel Jean Edmands Weeks and son-in-law Roland C. Weeks, born (as part of the Boom Generation) in York, York County, Maine. Farraghers finished paying off 1938 mortgage on Carmel Road house. Losing desire to see movies: [16 July] "Kind of funny but I don't seem to care for movies anymore." Joined American Legion Auxiliary. Continued volunteer work at thrift shop. Robert W. Monday, January 1, 1945 (age 57): Rain. Went to movies & it was pouring when I came out. Took all the snow away. Cleared off later.
Tuesday, January 2, 1945 (age 57): Fair & cold. Got letter from Jean & check from Allan. Bought an income tax blank book instructions. Also got my trifocals at Dr. Emmons. Went to Red Cross & made 75 dressings.
Wednesday, January 3, 1945 (age 57): Eva Dea birthday. Fair in a.m. & cloudy in p.m. Stayed downtown at dinner & got Allan's ck. cashed & put $25 in bank & bought a bond with little Allan's name on it besides mine. Paid union dues for last month $7.98. Bought book What Became of Anna Bolton? in bookstore, also barrett for hair.
Thursday, January 4, 1945 (age 57): Eleanor Tucker birthday. Cloudy. Was nearly late to work but managed to get there on time. Put $15 in bank for Chris. Got some oranges tonight to eat. Met Ins. Co. got income tax blank from Press to make out a return. I got $1669 & 245.03 was withheld so I should get something back. Seem to have kind of a sore throat.
Friday, January 5, 1945 (age 57): Clear & cold. Got first pay of the new system where you get so much taken off if you are in a certain group. Paid Playdon for Belle Paul's sympathy banquet. Sent in income tax blank & sent letters to Allan & John. Put piece about Slade Cutter being in command of a new sub at Portsmouth in Allan's letter & a piece about the Sorenson boys in John's. Letter from Jean. Worked this p.m. but Ruth or the comp. room didn't. Worked in Thrift Shop an hour. Got church envelopes.
Saturday, January 6, 1945 (age 57): Very cold. Went into Boston to the ear clinic at Mass. Gen. & saw David Loveley. He fixed my ears. Took me to dinner & gave me a prescription for a wash for my ears. Went out with him to their apt. & stayed during p.m. & had supper. Quite a cute place—one room & kitchenette & bath. Got home about 9 oclock. Letter from Allan. He says Mary will stay with him till he goes out again. Butchy went to Christmas party.
Sunday, January 7, 1945 (age 57): Snow. Didn't go to church. Washed some clothes & picked up room. Wrote to Jean & a thank-you note to Eleanor Lovely & put in the $2 David wouldn't take as a fee.
Ethel came over & brought the toilet water Eva gave me for Christmas. The first bottle the clerk at Lowe's dropped & cracked the bottle so that it seeped out, so she got her money back & got this over in Masden's in Law. The snow is getting quite deep. Had the paper collection just the same. I put in some old magazines.
Monday, January 8, 1945 (age 57): Cloudy & warmer. Got a bad head cold--nose & eyes running. Sent off magazines to Jean, letter to Allan & order to the Pine Tree Co for fountain pen & soap kit with perfume & bath oil. Bought a bond with Anna Jane's name on it besides mine. Only had to read Press proofs. Went to movies & saw Our Hearts Were Young & Gay & story about the discovery of ether for an antiseptic. [Obit clipping with page: Gordon S. Tuesday, January 9, 1945 (age 57): Cloudy. Cold a little better as my eyes don't run. Started on the Hub today & getting along on the Technique. Didn't go home to dinner as I felt too tired. Bought orange, apple & pear & ½ doz tangerines to eat here at home in evening. Letters from Jean & Minerva, wonder of wonders—a long one to make up for not writing all year.
Wednesday, January 10, 1945 (age 57): Clear & very cold. Came home to dinner but it was so cold I wore a kerchief on my head going back. Wrote to Jean & told her about Minerva's letter. Bought some valentines for the four grands in the bookstore and some corn pads & moleskin in 10¢ store.
Thursday, January 11, 1945 (age 57): Cold but warmer than yesterday. It snowed a little this a.m. but soon cleared off & got a little warmer. Didn't come home to dinner though. Got paid by check & cashed it & bought a bathrobe for Roland for his birthday $11.95 at Elanders. Catherine came around with the checks this morning.
As I was going out of bookstore Ruth said Margaret said that some woman dropped dead on Main street. Made app. to have a permanent at Curly Top on Sat pm at 1.30. Letter from Jean with label in to put on package for Butchy's sweater when it comes.
Friday, January 12, 1945 (age 57): Cloudy & snow tonight but a little warmer. Got sweater from Jean today that I left down there & she also sent Butchy's on to show me--then I sent it on to him. It's awfully cute, a heather mixture, green & so soft.
Mrs. Roy Bradford was at dinner at Nellie's today but I didn't get home till 12.45, as I waited & read a form so I wouldn't have to go back this p.m. Wrote to Jean, did up pkg for Butch & put in some soap that also came with pine oil & perfume from the Jonathan Lodge people in Newport N.H. Also the pen I'm writing with. Got dress from cleaners, pearls from Billings I was having strung & bought a gold bracelet they were selling as part of an estate. Saw Ethel in post office & we went up to A&P. Bought lemons & tomatoes. Went in Thrift Shop for about 1½ hours. Eva Dea & Roger came in & bought coat & shoe skates. Fixed buttons on black dress, put on navy brass ones this time.
Saturday, January 13, 1945 (age 57): Cloudy--snow melting. No mail. Went downtown & got beans & doughnuts for Carters. Got a birthday card for Peggy & will put a handkerchief in it & write a note. Had permanent at Curly Top--took 3½ or more hours--takes a long time for it to dry. Got Carters meat for them. Bought a comb & pair of knitting needles for Jean. Walked home with Mrs. Billings. She said Minnie was going to be operated on tomorrow.
Sunday, January 14, 1945 (age 57): Cloudy & cold-- snowing at times. Was cold in the room as I had little window open & the heat didn't come up. Didn't get up till 10.30 so I didn't go to church. Washed out stockings & nightgown. Had a swell roast pork dinner. Went over to Dea's & mailed letters to B. Sullivan & E. Harrington on the way, also papers to Jean. Walked down to Miss K's with Ethel & showed her how to make out income tax.
Monday, January 15, 1945 (age 57): Cold & clear. Roads were cleared out but sidewalks weren't--quite a lot of snow. Letter from Jean & I wrote to her & sent off Peggy's letter too & card & handkerchief for her birthday.
Found a mistake in the Technique folio. 37 instead of 137. I had marked in a bracket & they took out the 1. Found it after it was printed when I was reading the backup. Went to movies & saw Barn Dance & first part of Till We Meet Again but didn't stay as it was a war picture.
Tuesday, January 16, 1945 (age 57): Cold & snowy-- regular blizzard at times. Didn't come home to dinner. Annie Burchan didn't come up to restaurant on acct of the weather. Won't go to Red Cross as it's too blustery for me. No mail.
Wednesday, January 17, 1945 (age 57): Birthday of M. Phyllis Edmands, John's wife. Also Arthur Howell's birhtday. My mother died 34 years ago.
Cold. Tried to snow this morning & was cloudy all day but looks as if it might clear tonight. Letter from Jean & card to come to ch. supper but I tore that up. Sent Roland's bathrobe down & the 2 needles to Jean. Don't know whether they are what she wants or not but hope so. She says R. is sick with cold. No work for Ruth all day, but I read the last black form of Technique today. Now comes the color. Went to see Going My Way with Bing Crosby in it tonight. What a crowd waiting to see last show. Nellie & George went to Free church supper.
Thursday, January 18, 1945 (age 57): Birthday of Eleanor Lovely-- 25. Cold & clear. Not much to do this a.m. except read. This p.m. I had a lot of folding A.A. letters with Thelma. She went to the blood donors. Ruth wasn't in. Letter from Jean. Met Ethel & she & Eva had been to Boston. Ethel bought me a woolen scarf to wear around my head. Washed out a few things. Bought some oranges & tangerines. Mrs. C. paid the insurance for January out of money I left for that. This is Dave Lovely's wife's birthday.
Friday, January 19, 1945 (age 57): Cold & clear. Bill from Blue Cross for $2.58 which I paid. Letter from Jean thanking me for the bathrobe I sent Roland. She & he think it is lovely. Glad they do. Quite a lot of work today. Went to the Thrift Shop but didn't sell anything.
Saturday, January 20, 1945 (age 57): Clear & cold-- nice day for being out. Nellie & I went to Boston. I bought Jean 4 prs of curtains & had them sent to her from Hoveys & also bought a birthday card for Roland & sent that from Boston. Nellie bought 3 prs of straight curtains in Hoveys & a sweater in Chandler's basement. Had dinner in Filenes. Train late going in but we had plenty of time. Came out on the 4 oc. from Boston.
Sunday, January 21, 1945 (age 57): Clear & cold. Went to church for first time this year. Nellie had a boiled dinner & it sure was good. Wrote to Jean & mailed it; went over to Eva's. Ethel wasn't there when I got there but came later & after we had been there awhile we went down to the Shawsheen Manor to eat. I had pork chops & Ethel had chopped steak.. I paid for it, as E. has me to dinner at Miss K's quite a lot. Nellie was over at Miss Farmer's & she told me that Miss F. fell down stairs & skinned her legs & bruised herself. She is going over to Lawrence to a relative's to stay for a few days.
Monday, January 22, 1945 (age 57): Birthday of Roland Weeks-- 46. Fair in morning & cloudy at night with snow. Was nearly late this a.m. getting in at 7.29 but a miss is as good as a mile. Had quite a little work to do finishing Courant & 2 forms of Bus. School reprints. Read one of the mystery stories in my book--The Five Bullets. No mail. Sent off Townsman & funnies to Jean. Lucy Gibson came over to stay while Miss Farmer is in Lawrence recuperating from her fall.
Tuesday, January 23, 1945 (age 57): Cloudy & warmer, but colder toward night. R. Saunders went to a tea given by Mrs. Guy Howe to those who had worked at the Thrift Shop. Quite a bit of work, but not rushed. Letter from Jean. Went to Red Cross & made 100 dressings. Miss Eades bought some rice crispie candy that was delicious, although she thought it should be crisper.
Wednesday, January 24, 1945 (age 57): Cold-- tried to snow a little & then got colder. Sent a card to Miss Farmer. Stayed downtown this noon as Nellie was out. Paid a dollar on tan dress. Cost 3.98 at Harborn. Met Helen Darby & talked with her a while. Bought some Temple oranges & tangerines.
Thursday, January 25, 1945 (age 57): Very cold & clear. The thermometer went down below zero last night & it sure was cold going to work. Then there was only a little heat on & the boiler was cracked & all the fire had to be raked out & it was all smoked up. Ruth built a fire in her stove, but it was cold as a barn in my coop, as I came out at 3.30 & went over to the hairdressers & got an earlier appointment. Glad I did too, because she put the ointment on my hair & it took longer to dry. No mail. Paid for dress at Harborn.
Friday, January 26, 1945 (age 57): Cold & clear. Got the Press warmed up during night so it was good this morning. Had letters from Jean & Mary this morning & John & Mrs. Johnstone this p.m. Mary is back home in San Diego & had a lot of fun having a belated Christmas. John & Peggy may be up in 2 weeks but probably can't bring Carla. He's going to be on a destroyer to be commissioned at Staten Island in April. Allan must be out again. Mrs. Johnstone had Mike & his family with her from June till Dec 23 & then went up to visit her sister. Mike's family are living in Bethesda. Got Dad's watch [she refers to her late husband as "Dad"] watch at Billings, where it was being cleaned. Pd $5 on it. Got goblets at Thrift Shop.
Saturday, January 27, 1945 (age 57): Cold & clear. Lots of wind but a wee bit warmer. I went to Lawrence this morning & got Nellie a couch cover set. Also got some napkins & told her she needn't take them if she didn't want them but she did. Letter from Jean. She likes her curtains. Changed my bed around as the light from the streetlight shone in my eyes. Fixed my bureau. Manicured my hands & did some washing.
Sunday, January 28, 1945 (age 57): Birthday of Nellie R. Carter -- 69. Nice day. Rather cold. Nellie had Thaxter & Lucy Eaton up for dinner & roasted pork, baked potatoes, onions, peas, salad, celery, olives, cranberry jelly, mince & squash pie. Lucy Gibson went over to see Miss Farmer. I washed dishes. David Lovely came over in afternoon but Eleanor didn't come as she had a headache. Then Ethel came in pm & I went down to Miss K. Gave Nellie a couch cover set for her birthday & she got lots of cards. Wrote to John & Jean.
Monday, January 29, 1945 (age 57): Birthday of Nellie H. Farmer -- 80. Snow sleet hail & rain. What a day! I didn't come home to dinner nor to supper as I went to the movies. Saw a mystery story & ice follies picture. Pretty good. Gordon Brown died of pneumonia. [clipping obit between pages] Hardly any work. Finished up color on Technique.
Tuesday, January 30, 1945 (age 57): Clear & cold. Not a bad die out after the storm. Letter from Jean & Reader's Digest. Quite a lot of work for Ruth as the Town Report came in. She told me about Gordon Brown dying & Bessie saw me tonight & told me also. George Dumont's mother is sick too. Had a shock.
Wednesday, January 31, 1945 (age 57): Clear & cold. Letters from Jean & Allan. A. said he was still in this country but had gone down to San Francisco to go on a cruise. That's when Mary & Butchy went home. He hasn't been made Commander yet & I wrote to Mrs. Rogers our Congressman to see if there is anything she can do to help. Miss Ryder came this evening to spend a few days with Nellie. Quite a little work at Press. Ruth had a bad toothache & didn't come in this pm. G. Dumont wasn't in. A new man has come-- J. Wood from Dorchester. He has worked in Warren Press 19 years. Sent sympathy card to Mrs. G. Brown.
Thursday, February 1, 1945 (age 57): Cold & clear. Ruth didn't come to work but had an app. with Doc. McTerman, but he didn't help her any & she came in & showed how swollen her face was & they all advised her to go to Fleming which she did & he got a lot of pus out of her tooth. She's to stay in & drink liquids. Lexie came in this pm. Had quite a lot of folding to do & reprints of the Business School jobs. Letters from Jean with John's letter in it, E. Harrington & prescription for salve for ears from Dave Lovely.
Friday, February 2, 1945 (age 57): Still cold but clear. Had quite a day getting things mixed up at Press. Lexie was in. Went to Thrift Shop for an hour at night & Mrs. Howe was there taking Ruth's place. Wrote to Jean. Went to movies to see And Now Tomorrow with Allan Ladd & Loretta Young. Nellie & Miss Ryder went to stunt night at church for the Free church service men's club. Said it was very good. Lucy Gibson & I stayed home.
Saturday, February 3, 1945 (age 57): Still cold & clear. It's been a sunny week but very cold. Took bath after breakfast this morning & then went downtown. Forgot the pres. for my ear salve. Mailed letter to Jean & got stamps. Got my allotment ck from Allan by asking at the post office. Put $50 in bank & got a bond made out to me & Carla.
Took my prescription down this pm when I went to Law. & then forgot to get it when I came home. Couldn't find the place where the union met so didn't go to meeting. Got some elastic & a frame for Mary's picture in Law. Met Ethel down there with dog. Met Helen Rosche in Law, Uncle Asa, Helen & her son? for supper.
Sunday, February 4, 1945 (age 57): Clear & cold -- a little warmer but still chilly. Cloudy in pm. Went to church and took communion for the first time in a long time. David & Gertie may come to dinner. Lucy went over to see Miss Farmer. Had a nice afternoon with the company & then I went over to see Ethel & went back with her to Miss K's & had tea.
George said on the radio Manila had fallen to the Americans.
Monday, February 5, 1945 (age 57): Snowed during last night about 6 inches. Now clear but going to be colder. Went to work this a.m. but not this p.m. Lexie in as Ruth had tooth out today I believe. Letter from John saying they might be up either Wed. or Thurs. I sent airmail back to let me know if they would get into Boston in time to go directly down to the beach. Card from Allan from Monte Rio, Calif. the place he hiked to a week ago Sunday. Made an app. for shampoo tomorrow.
Tuesday, February 6, 1945 (age 57): Not quite so cold but kind of bad going where it was melted. Got shampoo & she rubbed in the ointment. Takes a long time to dry, so I wouldn't make her wait an hour for the bus, but came out when it wasn't very dry on top. Letter from Jean. Sent valentines to the four grandchildren.
Wednesday, February 7, 1945 (age 57): Clear & then cloudy-- not so cold. Went to Boston thinking John might come on the train from Wash. which gets in at 7. It was ½ hour late but he wasn't on either section. Heard that Phil Cole's younger son Bill had been drowned off San Diego trying to save another fellow who was washed overboard on a landing barge. George Dumont's mother died last night. No mail.
Thursday, February 8, 1945 (age 57): Snow started this morning. Regular blizzard by night. Got telegram from John just after I got home that he & Peg would be in Boston at midnight & stay all night there & come out Friday a.m. Hope it stops snowing by then. Telephoned to Louie that I might not be in & to Jean saying John was on his way.
Friday, February 9, 1945 (age 57): Cleared off after the worst blizzard for years. I couldn't have gone to work this a.m. even if I'd planned to. Lucy Gibson went this p.m. & I went down to the station & waited for 2 hours & they didn't come--J. & Peg, but just after supper he telep. from station & said they were down there & would come up in a taxi. Street isn't shoveled out yet, & they had to walk in from corner, but they got here after a while. Train didn't get in from Wash. till 5 this a.m. & it took 1½ hours from Back Bay. No mail came in.
Saturday, February 10, 1945 (age 57): Cloudy & warmer. John, Peggy & I walked around town & got some things. I did some of Nellie's errands. Met a number of friends who were glad to see John. Got valentine from Christine & letter from Congressman Rogers who seemed sympathetic toward Allan's case, but I don't know as she will do anything about it--she may. Thankyou note from M. Valentine. Called up Jean & John & Peggy talked with her. Then John called up David & Eleanor answered & said they might be up today. Also got detective books.
Sunday, February 11, 1945 (age 57): Clear & now melting. Bad walking but we went to church & I got Lucy some South church calendars & we went over & saw Miss Kimball & Ethel a few minutes. Nellie had a nice chicken dinner & Dave & Eleanor came over & stayed all pm & then Mr. Lovely came & got us & we went up there & had supper. Then Mr. L. took D. & E. to train & John & Peg went with them.
Monday, February 12, 1945 (age 57): Birthday of Abraham Lincoln. Fair. We took the train to Boston & then to Portsmouth getting to Jean's about 6.30. Roland had been in Portsmouth all day & met us at the train. He & I got off at the road where the bus turns down & J. & Peg went on downtown & R. got the car & went after them as the suitcase was heavy. Jean was mighty glad to see them. I took down some steak & minced ham. Got valentine from Allan with a beautiful orchid on it, also a letter from Minnie Valentine thanking me for her book.
Tuesday, February 13, 1945 (age 57): Fair but dubious at times. We stayed around the house & I did some ironing. Later Roland, Jean, John & Peg went over to the doctor's at Ogunquit. Had the steak for lunch & Jean got a roast of pork which we had for dinner. John & Peg knitted on a suit for Carla. Roland bought Jean some chocolates for a valentine.
Wednesday, February 14, 1945 (age 57): Cloudy & snow flurries all day. They went over to the village & Jean took John & Peg up to the hospital. Bought lobsters & cooked them & Peg was all in trying to get the meat out, but liked them. They walked downtown for the mail. Jean ate too many chocolates I guess & had a dizzy spell but felt better later.
Thursday, February 15, 1945 (age 57): Fair. Left the beach at 12 & Portsmouth at 1.15 which was 15 minutes late in starting, waiting for the Dover bus, but we got to Boston practically on time. Went over to South Station in taxi & had some coffee in South Station after the waitress had glared at us for asking twice for it. Peg had some fried clams to start her shore dinner which was continued on the train by the lobster salad sandwiches Jean had made. I found Dave & Eleanor & as the train was in we all went aboard & inspected their drawing room. Train left at 4 & Dave & Eleanor came out to Andover with me and I went up to Lovelys to supper.
Friday, February 16, 1945 (age 57): Foggy & clear in pm. It snowed again during night. I called Lexie up but tried to get Louie 3 times & couldn't, so I didn't go to work today. Wrote to Christine & Mary & Jean. Went to movies in pm & saw The Woman in the Window. Very good. Worked at Thrift Shop for an hour & bought an anchor pin for my coat. Played cards in the evening with Lucy & Nellie as George was at the church. Asked Miss Humphreys over the telephone for the piece that was in the Trib. about John as Nellie had sent hers to Russell. Gave Nellie $5 for J. & P. board, after the stuff I bought was taken out.
Saturday, February 17, 1945 (age 57): Cloudy. Took a couple of dresses down to laundry & nightgown. Did some washing myself. Got the pink dress that was dyed blue--looks good. Sewed on buttons. Bought 2 pans for Jean & a double photo frame for the 2 pictures of Carla she has. Went downtown with Nellie to help carry her bundles. Met Lexie & told her about Jean, & Ethel this morning & told her. Got paper from Miss Humphreys.
Sunday, February 18, 1945 (age 57): Clear & cold. Went to church. Eleanor Svenson was there. Dicky Thiras walked home with us & felt bad because she hadn't seen John. I got 2 calendars for Lucy Gibson as she didn't go to church. Went over to see Miss Farmer with Lucy Gibson. She sure has changed since she had her fall. Her mind seems to have failed a lot. She is going out to see Chester.
Monday, February 19, 1945 (age 57): Clear & cold. Went to work. Didn't sleep much last night. Wrote a note & put it on Phil's desk about getting through & going down to Jean's. He hasn't said anything about it. The Press gave George Dumont a watch today as he is officially through. Went to movies & saw Storm over Lisbon--an international intrigue story & Tall in the Saddle--didn't stay for the whole of that. No mail.
Tuesday, February 20, 1945 (age 57): Cloudy & cold--Feels like more snow. Card fo thanks from Mrs. Gordon Brown for sympathy note. Letter from Jean. Wrote to her & sent funnies. Walked home with Marion Wilkinson & told her about Miss Farmer.
Wednesday, February 21, 1945 (age 57): Clear & a little warmer. Just a sprinkling of snow this morning. Quite a lot of work. Insurance paid premium on John's policy up to last of April. No mail. Had shampoo & wave at hairdressers & didn't get through till 6.20 so got supper at restaurant.
Thursday, February 22, 1945 (age 57): Heavy rain about all day. Slippery this a.m. but better walking tonight. Went to restaurant this noon as it was too bad to come home. Ruth went also. Just comp. room worked. Went back at 12.30 & got out at 4. Lucy Gibson went over to see Miss Farmer as she's going to Chicago tomorrow.
Friday, February 23, 1945 (age 57): Cloudy in a.m. & clearing toward night. Lot of snow gone as it's warmer. Snow loader the town bought last March just got here today & it made short work of the snow piled up downtown. Bought a blue crepe dress for Chris at Thrift Shop. May be too big but is very pretty. Did it up with some mysteries for Mary. Letters from Gladys Hardy, Jean Dundas, John & Jean. Gladys suggested I wait till the weather got better & I wrote & agreed. She also has to take care of Lois child. as her father-in-law died & she & her husband are staying at mother-in-law's. John & Peggy are going down to Norfolk on the boat today. Jean still working at hospital. Cole hasn't said anything yet. Collins out with appendicitis.
Saturday, February 24, 1945 (age 57): I went to Law. this a.m. & got 2 chemises, a slip & a pair of unrationed shoes at Walkover--brown ones. Had dinner at Pages. Buses jammed at 12 to come home so waited over 2. Took down the dress for Christine & mailed it & took in some laundry to be washed. Also took a bag of old stockings to the Goodwill. Mailed letter to Mary telling her dress was coming.
Sunday, February 25, 1945 (age 57): Clear. Nice day except for walking. Went to church. Over to Eva's after dinner & Ethel & I went down to Shawsheen Manor for supper. I had broiled halibut & she had hamburg. We had quite a gab. Finished afghan so far as making squares & putting them together.
Monday, February 26, 1945 (age 57): Cloudy & snow in pm. Asked Harold if P. Cole had said anything about my note & he said no. A lot of work. Didn't go to movies on acct. of the bad walking. Got some apples at Dantos. No mail. Sent funnies to Jean.
Tuesday, February 27, 1945 (age 57): Cleared this a.m. cold & windy. Asked Louie if Cole had said anything about my note & he said yes--so he got it. Busy as could be today on B.U. summer session cat. school report. Regis college cat. & Cherry Hill. No mail. Got afghan tied up around goblets, so I guess they won't break.
Wednesday, February 28, 1945 (age 57): Clear-- not too cold. Letters from Allan & Jean & a note from Ethel Harrington saying she would meet me in Boston Sat at 12 if it didn't storm. Jean hadn't heard from John. Bought some oranges in the First Nat. which are big. Hope they are good.
Thursday, March 1, 1945 (age 57): Snowed during night but a beautiful day today. Lexie heard her friend Eva Niehlman died at Pine Point Maine & she was pretty much broken up about it. Quite busy. Sent off 3 letters I wrote yesterday to Allan [This letter would later be returned to her, unopened and unread], Jean & Cong. Rogers. I hope she isn't mad because I wrote again.
Friday, March 2, 1945 (age 57): Cloudy this morning but cleared off. Snow going but still as lot on the fields & at side fo road. Did a lot of folding today at Press. Cole came out & said he got my note but he wasn't the one to ask anymore but the kingpin--meaning Hap I suppose. I said I thot he was & Cole said, No, he only worked here now. Letter from Jean & check from Allan [sent via third party]. Also ads. Worked at Thrift Shop & sold a man a suit for $15 for which he paid cash. Seemed to be just right for him. Also sold some odds & ends & an evening gown to a girl who was going to be in a minstrel show.
Saturday, March 3, 1945 (age 57): Foggy but cleared off in pm. Went to Bostn & saw Ethel Hitchcock & we went to lunch at Huylers & then to a show The Suspect with Charles Laughton. A mystery & good. We walked up to the Hotel Bellevue on Beacon st. & sat awhile and then had dinner there. It's a nice place. Went to Hoveys & told them about Nellie's curtains.
Sunday, March 4, 1945 (age 57): Fair & cold--rather blustery but not bad. Went to church. Bishop Sherrill gave confirmation to about 30. He preached about the Army-Navy chaplain service. After dinner I mailed a letter to Jean & went over to Eva's. Then Ethel & I went down to Miss Kimball's & had tea. I took her down some icecream. Also took back book I borrowed from Ethel & got 2 more from Miss Kimball-- This Is Kate and J. Lincoln's latest or rather his last--The Bradshaws of Harniss.
Monday, March 5, 1945 (age 57): Clear & cool. Didn't wear rubbers today. Forgot pocket book so came in back way but it was just as well for Nellie is having some rooms papered & painted. Went to movies but stayed only through one picture. Read book This Is Kate through. Miss Kimball lent it to me. No mail. Bought some Easter cards in bookstore. George really has a carbuncle & hasn't gone to work.
Tuesday, March 6, 1945 (age 57): Birthday of Russell Carter--40. Rain. Wore rubbers but they weren't much good so got a new pair which are stiff. Didn't come home to meals and went to hairdresser after work. Was 10 minutes late this a.m. as it was so dark I overslept. Plenty of work. Nellie had the paper all off the hall walls. Letter from Jean. Sent off the last week's funnies to her & an Easter card to Allan [This letter would later be returned to her, unopened and unread] & letter to Ethel Harrington with Miss Farmer's address in it. Bought The Razor's Edge in 10¢ store for $1.00. Good but a lot of muck in it too.
Wednesday, March 7, 1945 (age 57): Cleared off & was a fine day. Stayed down to restaurant to dinner & took book back to library--2¢ due on it. Woodwork varnished in the hall & doors. After supper went over to Miss Farmer's with Lucy Gibson & brought back potatoes in Nellie's clothes basket. Card from church to come to Thurs. eve. meetings.
Thursday, March 8, 1945 (age 57): Clear & cold. My hands were cold for about the first time this winter, but got warm quick enough in the restaurant. Had dinner there too. Looked at some dresses in the Barborn shop but they were too high and I really don't need one anyway. Would like a Navy outfit & may get one later. Letters from Jean & Ethel Hitchcock. Wrote to Jean. The sun is beginning to come in my north windows.
Friday, March 9, 1945 (age 57): Clear & cold. Came home to dinner & had fishcakes. Letters from John on which Peggy wrote a little. They are at Old Point Comfort in a hotel for Army & Navy officers & their families so they took Carla along. Also got letter from Mary & she let Janie take Janna with her up to San Francisco. I don't think Mary cares much about the baby, & she isn't well herself.
Worked at Thrift Shop & bought a dress for 4.50 black with black & white coatee. Then Mrs. Gibson went down later with me & got a blue dress which was a little big but she can get it altered. I had to turn up the hem of mine.
Saturday, March 10, 1945 (age 57): Clear & cold. Took bath--washed stockings & nightgown, dusted room. Took spring coat & a dress to cleaners. Wrote to Mary & John & posted letters. Got one from Jean. Went to Lawrence & got 2 prs of corset garters, a comb & t=2 brassieres for myself. Then I went to super store & got 2 suits for Butchy, a dress for Christine & one for the baby & sent them off. Got a chain cover for Nellie, but don't know whether she will like it or not. Took 2 mystery books down to library to be sent off to the camps.
Sunday, March 11, 1945 (age 57): Clear & cold. Spit show this a.m. Had a headache so didn't go to church. I read in my diary that I had a bad headache a year ago just after we moved to San Diego. Wrote to Jean & mailed it & came home again.
Monday, March 12, 1945 (age 57): Clear in morning but cloudy in afternoon & snow at night. Went into Thrift Shop this noon & saw how nice they had fixed over the place. Went to movies & saw Ray Milland in The Ministry of Fear, also Fibber McGee & Molly, but I'm not crazy over them in pictures. No mail. Sent Jean the funnies.
Tuesday, March 13, 1945 (age 57): Slippery this morning early but the sun came out & melted the ice & then dried up the wet. Hap said he wanted me to stay till the 23rd & I asked him why when I'd given him a month's notice. He will have to get Bessie in I guess. Got 2 letters from Jean, one this morning & one this afternoon. Nellie has got the front room all papered & painted.
Wednesday, March 14, 1945 (age 57): Clear & a little warmer. I wore my brown shoes & no rubbers. Went to movies with Lucy Gibson & saw Frenchman's Creek in Technicolor. Bought a blouse for Mary in Harborn shop & sent it. A blue one. Didn't come home to dinner as things were so upset here papering & painting & the doctor coming to George. Letter from Mrs Rogers but not much encouragement in it.
Thursday, March 15, 1945 (age 57): Fair & warm. It's kind of hazy out and may storm. Had 24¢ taken out of my pay for being 10 minutes late last week. Had dinner downtown. Got coat & dress I had at cleaners. Met Ethel on way home & stopped & talked. She has her car out. Got birthday card from Jean. Sent letter to Mrs. Rogers thanking her.
Friday, March 16, 1945 (age 58): Birthday of me & I'm 58. A little cooler. Cloudy but no rain. Didn't feel very well this a.m. as I woke up feeling punk in the night & had a headache this a.m. but it wore off. Said something about my birthday inadvertently to Lexie & she & Ruth & Thelma gave me a pretty pin this noon. I bought some nuts & candy & gave Ruth & Lexie the nuts & some candy to Thelma. got cards from John & Peggy & Carla, Lucy Gibson, Ethel, & Nellie & a bag from her. Worked in Thrift Shop but not much to do. Tried on some shoes. Lucy said that Chester wants Nellie to sell the house.
Saturday, March 17, 1945 (age 58): Cloudy & mild. Went to Law. & got Jean a bathinette at the Racket Store, also bought me some powder in Sutherlands. Had it mixed & a pair of gloves, tan ones. Got myself some candy at night. Letter from Jean. I sent off a box full of clothes down to Jean for myself. Ethel Humphreys gave me a ride down & back.
Sunday, March 18, 1945 (age 58): Clear & mild. Wore my black dress I bought at Thrift Shop to church & my spring coat. Eleanor was there. Had headache when I woke up but it's partly gone. Went to church. Lucy Gibson went over to Miss Farmer's to clear out stuff. Chester is here & is going to ship Miss Farmer's stuff out to her. I may get a rug. Went over to Eva's & she gave me some hand lotion Yardley's for a birthday present. Then Ethel took us for a ride over through West Andover. Went to Free church to hear "The Seven Last Words" by Free Calvary Baptist choirs. Lucy Gibson went with me.
Monday, March 19, 1945 (age 58): Clear in a.m. & then cloudy & a little rain. No mail but I wrote to Jean & Mary. A year since I left California. Went to movies but didn't stay as I didn't like first picture. Going over to see rug with Lucy.
[The following was written in weeks later] This is the day the U.S.S. Franklin was bombed by Jap plane & set afire. Worst naval disaster in War. Allan on it and was later reported missing.
Tuesday, March 20, 1945 (age 58): Cloudy & warm. Rained a little. Letters from Jean & Minerva & Minerva's sister-in-law is dying with a cancer buyt doesn't know it yet. John's kmother is with her & will be left alone if she goes. Minerva's letter was funny in spots. Wrote to her. Went over to see the rug at Miss Farmer's & didn't know as I wanted it but talked with Nellie afterwards & she said to bring it over & see. Will try to get the draperies too.
Wednesday, March 21, 1945 (age 58): Rain all day. Letter from Jean & telephone call this a.m that she had a bathinette given her at a shower at the hospital last night so I telephoned to the Racket Store not to send it from there as they hadn't got it started. Went over to Lexie's & played cards. She had 2 tables for the Easter Star. 50¢ apiece. She served refreshments of sandwiches & pot. chips & pickles--tea, icecream & cookies & I didn't sleep hardly at all. Kept thinking how I could buy Miss Farmer's house & when I did wake up after a brief nap I didn't seem to want it. Sent letter to Jean & enclosed Minerva's.
Thursday, March 22, 1945 (age 58): Rain & snow & wind. Not very good spring weather. Went into Fred Cheever's & asked him how much they wanted for Miss Fannie's house & he said $7500. That's out of the question but I guess they will have to come down. Lucy was over there all afternoon & evening yesterday & is tonight I guess. Had ends permanented on hair & it cost only $2. George Collins came in to look us over this a.m. but didn't stay long. Letter from Allan wishing me a happy birthday but it's 6 days late. Written March 10. [This would be the last communication from her son, who after he had sent it, sailed west out of communication, and by the time she received it, he would already be dead.]
Found out about Mrs. Ladd falling down stairs last night fracturing her skull & died. What a tragic family!
Friday, March 23, 1945 (age 58): Cleared off this p.m. but windy. Got one week's pay yesterday & took my card up for Catherine to fix up for my pay next week. Will have to pay up for bonds from that. May not get very much. Paid up union dues. Got spring coat at Thrift Shop $7.50. Navy blue--a little big but can move buttons over. A Mr. Vernon Walker disappeared. His wife is always in the Thrift Shop. Letter from Mary--says Allan may be away a year. Wrote to Jean & told her. I may be down Monday. Got box from Press but will take radio in little suitcase. Geo. has German measles. Wrote to Mary.
Saturday, March 24, 1945 (age 58): Fair & windy--regular March day. Sent Mary's letter & an Easter card to Miss Farmer. Went to Law. & got credit slip from Racket Store for the bathinette. Got another pair of gloves at Miss Bean's. Got dress at cleaners & sent shoes & stuff down to Jean's. George didn't feel like playing cards as his head ached.
Sunday, March 25, 1945 (age 58): Clear & springlike. Fixed over the buttons on coat I bought at Thrift Shop & wore it this pm. I got a calendar from the Free ch. for George, one from the South ch. for Lucy, & one of our own. Big crowd at ch. The Cherowbries boy was home & at church with his father & mother & John Elder spoke to me afterwards. He's thinner. Been 37 months in Pac. Gave Edith Kendall $2 for memorial lilies for Ernest & the baby for Easter. Went over to Eva's & Ethel & I went over to see Celia Derral's house, then to supper at Miss K's & asked her if she would like to go down to the beach.
Monday, March 26, 1945 (age 58): Clear & warm. Ethel & Miss Kimball drove me down to beach. We left about 10 & got here a little after 12. I went to hairdressers first & got my hair set, but it didn't do much good. Jean had just got her wash out & Roland came after a while with some fish which J. baked with potatoes & we had string beans & cake & Jello for dessert. They left about 5 for home. Jean has some lovely things for the baby. Miss K. gave her a beautiful white shawl.
Tuesday, March 27, 1945 (age 58): Clear & cooler--N.E. wind. Woke up with headache & it didn't go away for a long time. Jean gave me some soda water which seemed to settle my stomach. Did ironing & made a fish chowder out of the fish that was left over. Took a walk with Jean in pm & went for mail & paper later. Thunderstorm in evening lasted quite a long time. The Bertolines came to pack up as he has been ordered to Bainbridge, Maryland. Using my new fountain pen Jean gave me for my birthday.
Wednesday, March 28, 1945 (age 58): Clear & cooler. Felt a little better this morning. Did dishes & made bread. Hemmed up 2 sheets for crib made out of old ones Jean tore up. Went for a short walk with Jean but didn't go downtown. Virginia Clifford who used to live near Jean brought Roland home from town & then stayed to supper. She took Jean for a ride afterwards over to Ogunquit.
Thursday, March 29, 1945 (age 58): Clear & hot. Got up to 87 on Jean's piazza as it said it would in paper. How the flies came in if you left a door or window open. Cut up a sheet blanket & made four small blankets. Mended the rug Dad [she called her late husband "Dad"] made & put some tape around the edge.
Friday, March 30, 1945 (age 58): Fair & cooler, but hot in sun. Lots of wind. Cleaned up front room & took out mats & swept them. Also curtains & brushed them. Went downtown & got some vegetables also the mail. I got my last week's pay with 13 weeks taken out for bonds. Got $19 even at that. Ruth had changed with me so I got bonds together.
Saturday, March 31, 1945 (age 58): Cloudy & cooler--Rained a little, foggy at night. Helped Jean clean up. R. didn't get home until late as he stopped in village & got car. I went to Portsmouth and changed a slip for Jean & bought some writing paper, some varnish & candy & an avocado for Jean. Inquired prices of bassinets. Went to movies for a while & then walked down to station to get bus as I thought it wouldn't be crowded. When we got to town the sent on another bus for the crowd which was there. Had dinner at a restaurant called the Porterhouse.
Sunday, April 1, 1945 (age 58): Easter. Clear but very windy in the morning. Went to church & put in a dollar. We had chicken for dinner but I didn't feel very good all day. Had nightmare at night.

Tuesday, April 3, 1945 (age 58): Cloudy, but did part of washing & got it dry. Went downtown in pm & got oranges, apples & tomatoes & the mail. None for me. Walked with Jean in evening around the block. Betty Croy Fitzgerald had a baby girl today.
Wednesday, April 4, 1945 (age 58): Still cloudy but am doing the rest of the washing. It was cloudy all day, but we got the clothes dry by degrees. Some people from nearer Portsmouth came to look at Bertoline's house, the man working over in the Navy yard with Roland. Name of Morgan. Rain at night & one of the mats on the line blew off & got muddy again. Card from Nellie.
Thursday, April 5, 1945 (age 58): Cloudy in morning & windy. Cleared in afternoon. Went downtown in pm & got mail. All for Jean & Roland. Did ironing in morning. Walked around square with Jean at night. Wind blew hard.
Friday, April 6, 1945 (age 58): Clear & cold & windy. Made bread this forenoon. Jean drove me over to York Corners & I got the 2.30 Law. bus from there-- got to Law. about 4.30. Went in Sutherlands & saw Margaret Hodge & we had supper together at Morin's. Then I went to M's apartment for a while & home. Nellie ironing & was glad to see me. We started to play cards & George came home. Had mail from Mary & check from Allan [sent via third party].
Saturday, April 7, 1945 (age 58): Fair. Cashed check & did some errands. Made app. to have hair washed on Monday. Went to movies in pm & saw Song to Remember, the life of Chopin. Went to Law. after supper & got some white cloth for Jean to make a baby dress & 2 sheets at Farrs. Went down to Ruth's in a.m. & got some baby clothes out of Allan's sea chest, also a few other things. Saw Dot Black & called up Lexie re. shoe stamp, but she didn't want it back yet. Sent baby clothes down by mail to Jean.
Sunday, April 8, 1945 (age 58): Fair. Went to church & put in 2 weeks collection & Easter envelope. Eleanor & Janet were there & E. had on new suit she made & looked very nice. Went to walk with Nellie in pm around Johnson Acres. Ethel called up to see if I wanted to go over to Georgetown but didn't so she came for me later & I had supper at Miss Kimball's.
Monday, April 9, 1945 (age 58): Fair. It has been a lovely weekend. Had hair washed & did an errand or two. Paid cemetery yearly bill. Books came just before I left so took bill & paid it. Mr. Farragher had money for me when I went in to tell him he could send a money order down to the beach--or rather he said he'd have it by noon so I got it afterwards & got the 2.12 train to Boston & the 3.30 out to Portsmouth. Letter from John saying he couldn't send any money as the hotel bill was a lot.
Tuesday, April 10, 1945 (age 58): Foggy. Cleared during day. Did up a little ironing & washed out some things. Sat in sun this pm & hemmed 2 sheets for Jean. This a.m. cleaned out closet & fixed up bureau. While frying fish for supper burnt 3 fingers on left hand with fat. R. said Elsie Ellis wants us to come over to her house tomorrow & when we protested had to admit it was a baby shower for Jean. Wrote to Mary & John.
Wednesday, April 11, 1945 (age 58): Cleared off after foggy morning. Roland had to go up to Mrs. Andrews to let someone in to turn on water. I fixed 2 more sheets out of old ones. Went downtown & got bread & yeast cake. Bought myself some peanuts. No mail. Jean & I went over to Mrs. Ellis & they had a baby shower for J. About 25 there & she got a lot more pretty things. Mrs. E. served sandwiches & coffee & cookies. Didn't sleep much after. Roland didn't go to work.
Thursday, April 12, 1945 (age 58): Clear & warmer. Not so windy in morning. Went to Portsmouth in pm & took over Jean's clock to Ports. Elec. Co. Got a small unfinished bureau & some paint & it got here before I did. Went to movies & saw Roughly Speaking. R. met bus & as we were coming in yard Jean said that Pres. Roosevelt had just died. All the programs on radio were cancelled except war news & tributes to the president. He died at 4.35 pm after a cerebral hemorrhage. Wrote to Nellie & Ethel.
Friday, April 13, 1945 (age 58): Fair & a little hazy. Sun hot but east wind kept it cool here. Stained bureau outdoors. Made apple pie & put presses in the rest of the crust & made a smaller pie. Mrs. Elsie Ellis came over in evening & stayed to supper. Jean showed her all the rest of the things. Gave bureau a coat of stain. Oh yes--said that up above.
Saturday, April 14, 1945 (age 58): Fair & cooler Sat. night. Sent birthday card to Margaret Hodge for Monday. Roland didn't have to work, so went up to Gonic to get Mrs Andrews & open up her house Jean had her to supper and showed her the baby things. Gave bureau another coat of stain. Mr. Ladd found dead in the bathtub of his home. [obit clipping taped to page; he was an editor of the Lawrence Daily Eagle.]
Sunday, April 15, 1945 (age 58): Fair & cooler. Didn't go to church but made bread & cookies. Took a couple of short walks in pm. Mr. Mueller from up the street brought in some Vedac--a kind of varnish. Roland cleaned out cellar shelves & sandpapered chair outside.
Monday, April 16, 1945 (age 58): Cloudy--clear--cloudy again. Cold wind. Did washing & got it dry. Went downtown & took letters & changed Quaker Oats for HO, Got some liver. Invitation to party for Thelma at Helen Young's on Thurs. Sent dollar for present, but don't know as I'll go.
Tuesday, April 17, 1945 (age 58): Cloudy--foggy--misty. Jean received telegram saying Allan was missing in action at 11.30 a.m. & I got one [click to see the telegram] re-sent from Andover at 3.30 p.m. No details. Wrote to Min, Virg & El. & Dorothy. Telephoned Nellie. Wrote to Ethel, also to Mrs. Johnstone in Wash. & Ellis & Annie. Jean wrote to John & Mary & I added a few lines to Mary's.
Wednesday, April 18, 1945 (age 58): Clear & a little warmer. Cool wind. Letter from Nellie mis-sent to Kittery Point. Went downtown this a.m. Made bread & pies this pm. Got the chest of drawers painted & waxed, and it is dry now & upstairs. Roland got a telegram from Peggy that John had one from Jane about Allan & wanted him to use his judgment about telling Jean & me.
Thursday, April 19, 1945 (age 58): Clear & cool. Lot of wind. Letter from Minerva this a.m. & one from Ethel & Nellie with a postcard inside from Dot. Nellie said she had sent a card to Dot as she read the postcard & Dot wanted me to come down on Sunday. They all are awfully sorry about Allan & Minerva says he's a good flyer & no one saw him go down so he may be ok. Ethel won't believe it. The news tonight though over the radio isn't so good as the Okinawa battle is the worst yet & has cost the Navy more casualties than the Marines or Army. Jap suicide planes are doing it. Had telephone call from John & Virginia.
Friday, April 20, 1945 (age 58): Cloudy part of day--windy too. Around noon we went over to village & got oil changed in car & got a lot of groceries. Note from E. Tucker. I made 2 pies in pm. Waited for John & Peggy. They left New York about 3 pm. Had thought of bringing Carla up from Wash. but couldn't get Pullman reservations. They got to Boston about 8 in time to get a bus that comes through the beach at 11.30 & Jean & I met them at the corner of this street. Stayed up & talked till 2 a.m. They seemed quite surprised we were as well as we seemed I guess.
Saturday, April 21, 1945 (age 58): Fair this a.m. Radio announcer said that 15 or 16 ships had been sunk in the Okinawa campaign. Just said 5 destroyers & lesser craft. Roland painted one of the porch chairs green--looks nice. We went for walk in p.m. R. went for lobsters & was so long we wondered where he was and he had gone out to the lobster pots as the fellow had sold his order. R. was almost frozen. Had lobster & steamed clams for supper. I ate the leavings in the icebox. Peggy said she had nightmare. Mrs. Carter called up to say there was a special del. arrival for John. She read it over telephone & it was what he thought might have happened to Allan, that he might be down over the Jap mainland. Letter from Mrs. Lovely. I sent news to Trib & Tel.
Sunday, April 22, 1945 (age 58): Clear & windy--cold. John & Peggy had to leave after dinner. We got invitations to the commissioning of the Vogelsang & Roland may go. It's next Saturday in Brooklyn. John told about Allan signaling to him from his plane out at Midway & the skipper Ramsay getting all excited & telling John to get the message & John would say, "Regards to Ensign Edmands" which would make Ramsay mad. They left at 5 oclock from Cape Neddick on the Greyhound & ought to be in New York by 2 or 3 oclock tomorrow morning-- train from Boston. Monday, April 23, 1945 (age 58): Clear & windy. I did part of the washing including the sheets & spreads. Did ironing at night. Jean drove downtown at noon but no mail. She got a letter in the night mail from Eleanor. Roland painted one of the porch chairs green on Friday & it looks pretty good. Tuesday, April 24, 1945 (age 58): Clear-- some wind but not so much. Did rest of washing & went downtown & got some paper & envelopes. Jean had a letter from Mrs. Johnson & I had a note from Thelma thanking me for my part in her present, but she didn't say what it was. Alice Johnson hadn't heard about Allan evidently for she didn't say anything about it. Roland took Jean over to the doctor's & then went to the village. Dr. says baby in right position & may come any time now. Wednesday, April 25, 1945 (age 58): Cloudy in a.m. & rain in p.m. Roland went to Portland with Mrs. Andrews & bought a new suit, topcoat, hat, shirt & tie. Lots of mail. Notice about Allan from Trib., letters from Ellis, Annie, Lucy Gibson, Mr. Moses, Nellie, Lexie & Ruth. I answered Mrs. Moses & wrote to Mrs. Lovely. I went downtown twice & got almost home this pm when I found I didn't have my stamps so had to go back to p.o. for them. A little boy had found them on the floor. Answered Lexie & Ruth. Wrote to Jerry & Ethel Har. One of Greater Lawrence's highest ranking officers to be listed a casualty since the beginning of the war was reported Sunday. The serviceman is Lt. Comdr. Allan C. Edmands, of 6 Wolcott avenue, Andover, missing in action in the Pacific theatre of operations according to a Navy department communication received last week by his mother, Mrs. Mary C. Edmands, now visiting in York Beach, Me. A graduate of Punchard high school with the class of 1929, Lt. Comdr. Edmands was graduated from the United States Naval Academy, Annapolis, Md., in 1935. He received his wings at the U.S. Naval Training Station, Pensacola, Fla., in 1941 and was in charge of the plane aboard the U.S.S. Astoria when it was sunk by the Japanese off Guadalcanal along with two other U.S. cruisers during the battle action in that area early in the war. Lt. Comdr. Edmands makes his home in San Diego, Calif., with his wife and three children. He last wrote to his mother on March 10. He has a brother, Lt. E. John Edmands, USN, also an Annapolis graduate, serving with the Navy. When last heard from, he was also in the Pacific area, having been assigned to a destroyer.

Thursday, April 26, 1945 (age 58): Cloudy & rain. Letters from P. Cole & the Salvation Army. I guess they send these out to all families of men dead or missing. Went to Portsmouth & found all the stores closed as it was Fast Day in N.H. Bought magazines & went to movies--saw Belle of the Yukon--didn't care much for it.
Friday, April 27, 1945 (age 58): Still raining. Roland went to Portsmouth yesterday too & couldn't get a haircut so went today. No mail for me--some for Jean. Roland looked nice in his new clothes. We went downtown & over to see Mrs. Andrews before going to the bus at Cape Neddick. He left at 5.05 for Boston to go to N.Y. to see John's ship commissioned. A kid banged the door of the post office against my hand & it hurt quite bad for a time. Wrote to Salvation Army thanking them for letter. Mrs. Sweeney died.
Saturday, April 28, 1945 (age 58): Cloudy in a.m. Sent ticket on Greyhound that I got last June back to see if they would refund money. Letter from Mary & one from Dot Black in forenoon & from Harold Johnson in pm. Jean didn't feel very well today so laid around. I wrote to Harold & Dot. [The following written later] Arthur Jewett died I think on this date as Nellie's cut it out of a paper & sent it to me.
Sunday, April 29, 1945 (age 58): Rainy during day. Went downtown & got Sunday paper & mailed what letters I had. R. got home on 11.30 bus & as we had just gone to bed we got up & listened to his story of the weekend. He got to NY at 7 a.m. & went right over to hotel & met John coming out. He & Peg went to the commissioning together, Peg being late a little but they were right up front & went to inspection afterward. R. stayed on board all night. Had dinner at officers club. Had a good time--found out a little more about Allan.
Monday, April 30, 1945 (age 58): Still cloudy. Didn't do wash. Went to Portsmouth & got clock that had been fixed, got Carla a playsuit, & Chris one too, also a book. Got a Tony Sarg baby book for Jean. Also bought a thermos bottle & lunch box for R. He paid for that & some cards for Jean. Letter from Miss Farmer. She doesn't know about Allan. Also answer to one I sent Arthur Edmands, & this p.m. one from Nellie. Did up boxes for Carla & Christine.
Tuesday, May 1, 1945 (age 58): Cloudy. Did washing in pm as the water wasn't hot enough. Made bread too. Roland got strawberries & we had straw. shortcake. Mr. & Mrs. Cobb came in for a few minutes at pm near supper time. Jean talked quite a lot in even. so I wondered if she might not be coming along.
Wednesday, May 2, 1945 (age 58): Cloudy part of day. Got clothes in so Roland could get ashes out & old bottles from cellar. When I woke up this a.m. about 5.45 Jean was getting dressed & I heard her going back & forth. Said she had had pains since 3 oclock & passed a little blood. Roland took her over to the hospital about 10 min. of 6 & came back about 8. Said she had had no more pains. He telephoned at 12 & 4 but nothing doing. Went over to the hospital after supper. Came back 9.30. Townsman of April 26 came & letter from Dr. Lovely. Jean's pains started about 9 & at 12 they called R. from the hospital to come over which he did, expecting Jean to have the baby most any time.
Thursday, May 3, 1945 (age 58): Birthday of John Allan Weeks. Rain & cloudy. I couldn't sleep much & at 6 oclock a.m. I called the hospital but they said nothing doing. I took off clothes then & got about 1½ hours sleep. R. called about 9 and said Jean sleeping in between pains. He sounded all in. Roland telephoned at 11.o5 & said it was a baby boy--red head. Went over in evening & Jean was still pretty groggy. Nurse brought baby in, blue eyes and lots of red hair. Head shaped like Edmands. Letters from Helen Connon, Minnie, Senator Walsh, Mass. Hosp. Service bill which I paid.
Friday, May 4, 1945 (age 58): Birthday of Carla Howard Edmands 1 year old. Rain & wind all night. Slept pretty good though. Made pudding & stewed prunes. Went up to Andover to get mail & was coming home on Monday. Played cards as usual.
Saturday, May 5, 1945 (age 58): Fair. Birthday of Wilfred Edmands. He would have been 28. Also Geo. Christie's birthday. He would have been 76. Went to Law. & got a bassinet lining & sent to Jean. Don't know as it will do. Sent her little funnies & card telling about Ethel. Met Ethel & she was all in with her back. Called up later after she had been to the osteopath & asked if I would come down & get meals for Miss K. which I did. Got Allan's check cashed & bought bond for little John Allan.
Sunday, May 6, 1945 (age 58): Fair. Birthday of Nat Edmands. He's 30. Didn't go to church as I had quite a time finding things & the weather was so changeable I got very tired. Went up to Carters in pm & laid down. Called Roland & said I might not be home as Ethel didn't seem any better.
Monday, May 7, 1945 (age 58): Cloudy. Ethel still in bed but I'm getting used to the place. Went up at night & played cards at Carters.
Tuesday, May 8, 1945 (age 58): V.E. Day in Europe. Cloudy. Listened to President & other speakers saying war at end. Nellie went to Marg. Slats mother & daughter dinner at Free ch. Lucy Gibson came down & we went to South ch. in evening to union service. I went into Christ ch. in morning & took communion. Tried to pray for Allan.
Wednesday, May 9, 1945 (age 58): Cloudy. Still at Miss K's. We get along ok. Went up to Carters at night. Nellie said they had a service at Free ch. before they had the entertainment.
Thursday, May 10, 1945 (age 58): Cloudy & rain at night. Got some groceries for Miss K. & mailed cards & then came away. I guess Ethel is a little better. Felt kind of bad to leave but thought I ought to get back to beach. I left my umbrella at Miss K's. As it was raining so, I didn't start home, but had a rest. Miss K's house is so big I got awfully tired. Letter from Lucy Eaton & Mr. Hamblin. Wrote to Mary & sent Mr. H's letter on to her. Got letter from Jean saying she couldn't nurse her baby & she felt so bad about it. I wrote & told her I'd be back tomorrow.
Friday, May 11, 1945 (age 58): Birthday of Mary Christine Edmands 7 years old. Cloudy in a.m. & cleared off by the wind blowing in p.m. Came back early to Portsmouth as Miss K. wanted me to get some flowers for Jean, but couldn't get any as all were held for Mother's Day. Brought down the frame I had made with her baby shoes on it, also a box of candy, a card for John Allan with $5 in it from Miss Kimball & the bond for the baby. Jean had a lot of cards & flowers. R. came after a while & then we came home as he is all in--no sleep. Mother's Day card from Mary, box of candy from Peggy. Card from little John Allan for his grammy. Letter from Flora & Ed. My last letter to Allan returned.
Saturday, May 12, 1945 (age 58): Cloudy. Box of candy from Roland & card for Granny from John Allan, also one from Jean & Roland. Cleaned up a little & made some potato salad & tapioca for Roland. Saw Jean at night for a short time. Roland got stuff in Portsmouth to cover bassinet, but I've got to get some more lining. Lots of explosions off shore around midnight. Waldo went to Mrs. Moseley's funeral.
Sunday, May 13, 1945 (age 58): Mother's Day. Rain most of the day & especially at night. Roland took bassinet over to Mrs. Andrews to cover & she thought we should have more cloth. He went over to see Jean with Cobbs in afternoon & I snoozed & read my mystery most through--finished it this evening. We went over to Jean's about 6.30 & stayed 2 hours. She says the baby has gained.
Monday, May 14, 1945 (age 58): Fair for a wonder. Did the washing & then was going to Portsmouth to get some cloth for lining the bassinet & found I could get it here in Stacey's, so got 3 yards & took it up to Mrs. Andrews. Got letter written Mary by Allan's exec officer, C. H. Carr, which told what he knew of Allan's disappearance. Had to go over the side of the ship as the bomb struck & set fire. Not seen afterwards. I copied letter & wrote to John & sent copy. Wrote to Mr. Carr & will send letter on to Mary to mail, as I don't know what his rank is. Went over to see Jean & took over some of the squares R. is making so J. can sew them together. Didn't take letter.
Tuesday, May 15, 1945 (age 58): Fair & a little cooler. Letter from Ethel & a notice from John Wade of the union to vote for him for Pres. Did ironing & mending & went down & mailed letter to Mary & bought air-mail stamps. Pkg for Jean from Peggy. Wrote to Ethel this p.m. She's a little better I guess. Regular cloudburst coming home from hospital & after I went to bed. Sounded as though it was dripping in all around.
Wednesday, May 16, 1945 (age 58): Still cloudy. Swept downstairs & dusted. Went downtown after dinner & got groceries. Letter for Jean & Townsman. Jean was up when we went over & thought she would come home tomorrow but don't know. Gave us list of things to get. Roland went to village drugstore & bought bottles. We brought those home & plant Jean got from church.
Thursday, May 17, 1945 (age 58): Drizzle all day. Cold too. Made rhubarb, cranberry & prune & apricot pies. Bathroom sprung a leak so R. is out looking for a plumber. Baby 2 weeks old. A month since we got telegram from Navy about Allan. Didn't go over to hospital. Letter from Jean Dundas. She didn't know about Allan evidently, so I wrote her. She wanted me to ask Playdon about the urn for her mother's grave.
Friday, May 18, 1945 (age 58): Birthday of Clarence O'Connell 56. Rain-- Rained all night. Piece in papers about the bombing of the U.S.S. Franklin, the ship Allan was on. The worst naval disaster of the war. Nearly 1,000 men killed, wounded or missing. Went downtown & mailed letter to Mary, also one to Trib. Saw Mr. Parebteau at fish market & he said he would be right up to fix bathroom, but I don't know whether he did or not, for R. didn't hear him but the cover was on the bowl. R. went over after Jean & the baby & the house was warm as he got some coal & built a fire. While he was downtown, J. sterilized bottles & we talked about Allan. She read the letter, Letter from Nellie. Highchair came.
Saturday, May 19, 1945 (age 58): Cloudy all day but cleared at night. I made bread--changed my bed--did the dishes & went to Portsmouth. Got Jean several things for the baby. Sent back the letter Carr wrote to Mary about Allan as Jean had made herself a copy. Sewed up three sheets for the bassinet as the ones I had made were too big. Took a bath & went to bed. R. slept in his chair all evening. Letter from Annie Buchan.
Sunday, May 20, 1945 (age 58): Fair for a change. Didn't got to church. Got dinner--had meat cakes, whipped potatoes & asparagus. Jello for dessert. Had icecream & cake Mrs. A. sent over in evening. R. cut grass & did various odd jobs here & elsewhere. Jean has had cough since she was in hospital. I wrote to Nellie, A. Buchan & Ethel. Roland mailed them. Wrote to Capt. Gehres of the Franklin as there was a piece in the Herald that he was in Fairhaven at sister's & had answered letters--so I wrote about Allan & mailed it here.
Monday, May 21, 1945 (age 58): Cloudy again. I washed out some of my things & the baby's things & hung them out but took in baby things later as they didn't get dry. Baby fussy at times & is beginning to notice. He's cute as anything, though. Went downtown & got groceries. Letter from Ethel for me & a card & letter from Aunt Annie & Uncle Ellis with a dollar's worth of war stamps for the baby. Also card from Florida for J. & R. A number of men who brought back the Franklin are to receive medals today in NY on board the ship. Need 1,000 men to repair her.
Tuesday, May 22, 1945 (age 58): Cloudy. Birthday of Frances Caroline Edmands. Would have been 26 years old. Got washing done and it dried pretty well. Took in at night as rain was predicted, but it didn't. Letter from Lucie Hayward & her daughter. Marjorie & family have moved in with them. M's husband in Deaconness hospital very sick. Wants me to come down. Also got letter from Wash. about Allan being in Navy not a reserve. Townsman came. Card for J. & R. from Dot. Has moved to 4 Vine St. Melrose Highlands.
Wednesday, May 23, 1945 (age 58): Clear & windy also cloudy. Cleaned up downstairs. Did ironing & washed out baby things. Mrs Wagner came in to see the baby. Gave Jean bouquet, R. candy & rompers for the baby. Mrs. Ailman came in in the morning & thought baby lovely. She has just come back to beach. Letter from Helen Roache of sympathy. She broke wrist VE Day. Mary sent Jean a romper (yellow) & a pretty toy to hang on carriage. I walked downtown after supper & went into Gwen's gift shop & bought a box of nursery rhyme soap & a set of shiny cutouts for Butchy.
Thursday, May 24, 1945 (age 58): Birthday of Minnie Howell Liggett 64. Clear but cold wind. We tried the baby out in his bassinet on the porch in p.m., but it was too cold. Went downtown & got some salt fish, strawberries & potatoes in new store. Got letter papers, envelopes and another mystery in Garfields. No mail for me.
Friday, May 25, 1945 (age 58): Clear-- some clouds--still cool wind. Put baby on porch in sun & he's asleep. Jean's out there too. Stayed out quite a while. Washed out baby things. Had a hamburg & coffee at the Surfside when I was coming home from downtown. Jean got another romper from 2 friends of hers in Portland. I had a letter from J. Dundas. J. & I played dominoes at night. Mr. harris the minister came in in the p.m. & asked about having the baby baptized. Children's day is June 10, Allan's birthday.
Saturday, May 26, 1945 (age 58): Clear-- wind cool-- but nice in sun. Did work this a.m. & washed out baby things. Put baby out on sunny side of house & he slept there until almost 2. Planted a garden where the ashes were & some zinnia seeds in back of pansies. Letter from Nellie. Jean had one from E. Svenson. Wrote to Peggy & John asking them to come up.
Sunday, May 27, 1945 (age 58): Birthday of Virginia-- 38. Clear. Baby kind of fussy and Jean upset so Miss Chamberlain came over & said he seemed hungry. Fed him around 5 and he slept good that night. I felt like crying too & did several times during day.

Tuesday, May 29, 1945 (age 58): Cloudy. Went to Andover via Boston. Took Jean's fur coat in & her bag to be relined but cost $15 minimum change. Bag cost only $3.98. Took it home & gave it to Badwakis who charged 10¢ to stitch up rips. Had lunch in Ambassador.
Wednesday, May 30, 1945 (age 58): Birthday of John Findley-- 65 if he had lived. Cloudy-- rained in morning but not when the parade marched. Blowy. Walked downtown to Miss K's & Ethel & I went out & saw parade coming down School st. She took me & Nellie & Lucy Gibson to the cemetery in pm. The wreaths looked good & I'm glad I got them rather than bouquets as the bouquets blew over as soon as you put them in vases. After we took Nellie & Lucy home, we went up to Eva's but she wasn't home so we got Miss K. & went for a ride round West A. & Tewksbury.
Thursday, May 31, 1945 (age 58): Susie died 13 years ago. Cloudy & cold. Went up to Lexie's for evening & talked. She served icecream. Russell Carter & family came. Had hair washed.
Friday, June 1, 1945 (age 58): Still cold. More like March than June. The Carters went to the circus in Boston & took me as far as Stoneham. I went over to see Dot at her house in Melrose Highlands-- Greenwood line. She is having it papered & painted & it will look good. Sonny home & how I hugged him. They gave me Milton's picture to bring home. It sure is fine. Walked up to Melrose Highlands & got bus home.
Saturday, June 2, 1945 (age 58): Fair but cold. Went down to New Bedford to see Minerva. She met me at station. Jack sure looks like Allan in lots of ways. Had fire in fireplace as it sure is cold. Sat & talked. Joan gave me her picture. The Carters went to Lowell & took Mrs. C. for a ride.
Sunday, June 3, 1945 (age 58): Fair. Went to church with John, Babe & Jack. Jack is an usher & John is a trustee at church. Had fish for dinner & an apple pie M. baked. Sat around in pm. The New Bedford paper had pictures of Capt. Gehres shaking hands with Mr. & Mrs. Carr--parents of Charles Carr, Allan's junior officer. Minerva called her up as she lives in Fairhaven & she was very pleasant. Said her son thought the world of Allan. Said Allan was heroic to the last--pushing a bomb off the ship. Gave Joan pearls & Jack $5 for graduation & going into Navy.
Monday, June 4, 1945 (age 58): Cloudy. Came back from New Bedford & went to movies. Saw the picture of Franklin & I don't see how anyone lived on that ship. Didn't stay for other pictures as I felt too bad. Talked with Mrs. Nicoll after we came out. She hasn't heard from her boy either. Went up to Doctor's at night & he gave me some vitamin pills & pills for nerves. Letters from Capt. Gehres & Lt. Carr sent to the beach & Jean forwarded them. Sent Carr's letter on to John & asked him to write.
Tuesday, June 5, 1945 (age 58): Cloudy. Was coming back today to beach but Ethel said Miss K. was upset, so I went down & had dinner with Ethel. Miss K was in bed all day. Went over to Lawrence but didn't get anything special. Don't seem to want to buy anything.
Wednesday, June 6, 1945 (age 58): Cloudy & showery. 10 years ago Allan graduated from Annapolis, and now I suppose he's gone. Went to Lawrence to see if I could get baby scales. None at Racket Store nor Sutherlands. Went to North Reading with Ethel & Miss K. Miss K stayed for a while at Ruth Pennell's & E. & I went over & spoke to Lucie Hayward. Wrote to Jerry.
Thursday, June 7, 1945 (age 58): Cloudy but didn't rain. Ethel drove me down & Miss Kimball & Robert came along. Had dinner at Lannie's in Hampton. Went over to Ogunquit in pm, but no gift shops open. Bought a pair of earrings here in gift shop for Ethel. Easter card I sent Allan back. Garden I planted coming up.
Friday, June 8, 1945 (age 58): Clear in morning then rain & thunder all morning. Stopped long enough to wheel the baby downtown. Rather fussy part of day. Another letter back from Navy sent to Allan--that makes 4. Winnie Burtt also wrote.
Saturday, June 9, 1945 (age 58): Birthday of Allan C. Edmands Jr.-- 3. Clear but it says thunder this p.m. Jean & Roland went to Portsmouth.
Sunday, June 10, 1945 (age 58): Birthday of Allan C. Edmands--34. Fair in morning & cloudy toward night. Had John Allan christened at York Beach and he was very good & slept practically all day. Mrs. Andrews & Mrs. Ailman were at church to see him & Mr. Cobb was there too. Nice service & we came ouot after the baptism. Had a crying spell this morning as my first little boy was born 34 years ago & probably is dead. Wrote to Nellie & Mary & sent Mary program of Children's Day service.
Monday, June 11, 1945 (age 58): Fog & rain in morning, I woke up with headache & stayed in bed till noon. It cleared long enough for Jean to take the baby for a walk. Didn't get dressed all day but had dress over my nightgown. Wrote to J. Dundas & sent clipping about a Major Lloyd Coutts stenotyper at Post. Thought he might be the Bill Coutts we knew.
Tuesday, June 12, 1945 (age 58): Nice day-- Too warm in contrast to what we have been having. Went downtown at noon & got sandwich & milk shake at Garfields. Letter from Nellie with Detective Book Club bill in it, so I got a money order & sent it off. Baby slept fine in his carriage outdoors. Had a 3-minute sub bath in morning. Roland took off storm windows. It got cooler in afternoon. Ring around sun.
Wednesday, June 13, 1945 (age 58): Cloudy. Did baby's washing & made beds & mopped up down here. Mr. Langell came over to borrow scales. Our baby weighs 9 lbs. 13 oz. When I went downtown stopped at beach & soaked my feet for a while.
Thursday, June 14, 1945 (age 58): Birthday of my father.. He would have been 90. Fair but hazy off. Cool breeze but I'll bet it's hot downtown. Baby had sun bath this a.m. Went over to Langell's to see their baby & then R. & J. took him to Mrs. Andrews to call. Wrote to Nellie. Went down to gift shop & got birthday card & shell pin for Mary.
Friday, June 15, 1945 (age 58): Fair & thunderstorm at night. How it rained! Did baby washing. Didn't go downtown it was so hot. Jean cleaned upstairs & I walked the carriage up & down in front of house.
Saturday, June 16, 1945 (age 58): Cloudy-- hot-- sticky -- cold--fog. Went downtown with Jean this a.m. & got caught in rain. Baby all right as we had the cover for the carriage. Got Roland candy & card. Jean sent hers & John Allan's through the mail. Letter from Mary. She's let the house for $100 a month & Janey is going to take Janna to New Orleans with her. Mary can get trans. to San Francisco. Will be up in Centralia the first week in July. Wrote to Mary.
Sunday, June 17, 1945 (age 58): Yellow fog in morning. Hazy all day & cool. Didn't get up till 10. Did baby's wash. Jean walked over to Fords with baby.
Monday, June 18, 1945 (age 58): Foggy. Went downtown early & mailed birthday cards to Mary & a pin I got her in the gift shop here. Didn't do much all day as it was so foggy & damp. Did baby's wash. Jean went but in evening & the baby woke up & cried & I couldn't stop him. Had a mess in pants so I suppose that's what caused his discomfort. Slept find after 10 oclock feeding till 3.45. Lillian Smith & friend came in at suppertime.
Tuesday, June 19, 1945 (age 58): Birthday of Dad [that's how she referred to her late husband]-- would have been 61. Joyce O'Donnell-- 12. Did wash this a.m. Sunny for a whiile & then cloudy but got wash dry. Jean & Roland took baby over to see Mrs. Andrews & other friends. He's been pretty good today, hardly fussed at all & slept well. Letter from Ethel & June 7 Townsman came. Wrote to Ethel.
Wednesday, June 20, 1945 (age 58): Rain all morning but I washed out baby's things in p.m. Jean had to go to the village & was going to have her tooth looked at, but dentist took so long with others she didn't wait.
Thursday, June 21, 1945 (age 58): Fair but at night a shower, Roland drove Mrs. Ford & chil. up to Winchester so Jean & the baby & I came up to Andover. Found Nellie had the shingles & in bed. Her face is a sight all swollen with scabs on one side. We went up to Mrs. Johnson's on Carmel Rd., but Richie had a cold so didn't take the baby in. He was rather fussy from heat & long ride. Went down to Eleanor's & had dinner & stayed till Roland came for us about 3.30. I stayed on to see if I could help Nellie out. Got cracker & milk downtown & ate with Winnie Burtt. Lots of thunder at night.
Friday, June 22, 1945 (age 58): Cloudy but sun out part of time. Cleaned out my bureau-- did some ironing & mending. Woke up early with a bad headache so took pill & went back to sleep. Rubbed Nellie's back which seemed to ease her a little. Washed out gloves & took outing flannel nightgown & corset to laundry to wash. Went to Miss K's & stayed with her & Ethel during afternoon. Sent Jean a silver pin & earrings. Called up Louie about Ruth's vacation & saw Ruth later at Thrift Shop. Ethel & Miss K can't decide when to go or whether we will all go for a trip or not.
Saturday, June 23, 1945 (age 58): Birthday of Mary Hawes Edmands-- 28. Fair-- hot but good breeze. Did errands for Nellie & as she wanted to get up rubbed back. Helped get dinner & did dishes afterwards. Sent off birthday card to Jean.
Sunday, June 24, 1945 (age 58): Beautiful day. Married 37 years ago. Stayed in with Nellie in forenoon while George at church & Lucy went to Amesbury. Went over to Eva's in pm & Ethel drove me up to Lovelys but David wasn't there. He's had the G. measles. Stayed at E. to supper. Wrote to Jean.
Monday, June 25, 1945 (age 58): Birthday of Jean Edmands Weeks-- 36. Hot. Did errands for Nellie while Lucy washed & we both got dinner. Went down to Miss K's in pm. Helped Ethel get things in suitcases & into car. Saw Harold & G. Collins at Press & they shook hands. Harold wants me to come up some night to supper. Card from Mary saying she had been sick with pneumonia. Wrote to her & to Jean. Sent letter off this a.m. & papers & a card this pm.
Tuesday, June 26, 1945 (age 58): Thundershowers early & rained after we got started on trip. Got dinner at Howard Johnson's on the toll road at Portsmouth. Started to pour then & all afternoon. Got to the Frances Jewell cabins at Wells. Got one with 2 bedrooms--twin beds in one & double bed in other. A Mrs. Moody owns them. Clouds from hurricane out at sea like a snow bank. Most beautiful rainbow I have ever seen all the whole bow & a reflection almost as good. Had sandwiches & coffee for supper.
Wednesday, June 27, 1945 (age 58): Rainy off & on all day. Went over to Kennebunkport & around beach. Had dinner at Kennebunk Inn. Felt like coming home it was such miserable weather. Bought holder at Women's Exchange.
Thursday, June 28, 1945 (age 58): Birthdays of John [Jack] & Joan Russell-- 18. Cleared off in middle of day. Had dinner at Cascade Inn after we had seen the State of Maine exhibit at Saco. Went down to Wells Beach & paddled in pm. Got doz eggs from farm across street from cabins. Bought holder & pine soap also bayberry candles at State of Maine Industries in Saco.
Friday, June 29, 1945 (age 58): Foggy in morning-- thought it was going to rain, but it cleared some later. Called up Jean from the main house & R. answered & said John & Peggy were here so Ethel & Miss K. came over & left me. On the way we saw Henry Dea in truck with Ruth so had them follow us to the house & meet John again. They went on home. They had been down to Sanford with Rebecca. Jean had fish for dinner with potatoes, onions & beets & cream cakes for dessert. Carla is a darling, so happy & fat. She made up to Miss K. which pleased her. John Allan has changed since a week ago. They left the children with me & went bowling. Carla cried some when I got her to sleep.
Saturday, June 30, 1945 (age 58): Hot & cloudy but cool breeze once in a while. Had a lot of fun with Carla & rocked her to sleep this morning. They left on the 8.28 bus for Boston & we took them over to Cape Neddick. I had to cry as usual. John will have to out to the Pacific & Peggy & Carla will go out to California in July, so we won't see them for a while again. Little John Allan doing stunts on his table. He's getting cuter every day.
Sunday, July 1, 1945 (age 58): Fair & hot but not so humid. Jean got some meat for a pot roast yesterday & it tasted good. Did usual chores & then sat around. Too hot to be out this a.m. but cooled off at night. took a short walk this even. Jean went out for a walk when I got back & came home with Roland.
Monday, July 2, 1945 (age 58): Very hot. I went downtown in a.m. & mailed package to Peggy with diapers, comb, sugar & Carla's socks in it. Had to change $10 bill & the p.o. clerk didn't like it very well. Got some groceries for Jean. Ethel & Miss K. came in p.m. & E. & I went down on beach & soaked our feet. Left about 4 oclock & had supper at Lamie's. Got home about 7.30. Rained some. R. Carter & family here for a day or two. Learned that Mrs. Humphreys died last Thurs. & was buried Sat. Card from Mary written June 29. Leaving for Centralia.
Tuesday, July 3, 1945 (age 58): John & Peggy's 3rd wed. anniversary. John Allan 2 months old. Cooler. Beautiful day. Went down to Press & paid dues & talked to the gang. Met Louie after dinner & he said to come in Thurs. Went to Lawrence & ordered a baby scale sent down to Jean. Sent back pictures to Jean & film as she can get the pictures just as quick there, Played rummy at night. Barbara Johnson called & said she would call for me at Press on Friday.
Wednesday, July 4, 1945 (age 58): Clear & a little warmer but lovely out. Washed & ironed slips & dresses. Found slip in laundry bag I had forgotten. Mended 2 slips. Let down hems of dresses. Played rummy at night.
Thursday, July 5, 1945 (age 58): Birthday of Janet Svenson--10. Clear--hot. Went to work at Press. Have Harvard Business School book, Mass. Dental & I guess Davis & Furber are coming. Finishing St. Mark's. Had breakfast & dinner downtown. Got Allan's check. Talked with Peg Sweeney about him & her mother.
Friday, July 6, 1945 (age 58): Hot & sticky. Thundershower about 3.45. Rained hard. Barbara Johnson came after me in car & I went up there to supper. Harold didn't get home till 8.30 & then went down to station & got Lillian who was staying overnight. Patsy talked most of the time so didn't get a chance to say much. Harold brought me home. Had roast beef, a salad & the new kind of peas you can eat pods & all also blueberry pie for supper. Got $11.20 check back from income tax.
Saturday, July 7, 1945 (age 58): Fair & hot but good breeze. Washed out some things & ironed dress for Nellie & overalls for George. Went downtown for dinner & had creamed chipped beef. Cashed Allan's check by putting $25 in for Allan Jr., Carla & John Allan. Have them in my name in trust for them. Will have one for Anna Jane as soon as I earn a little. Bought a bond with the $11.20 & cash I had on hand. Also paid $5 on black silk dress. Paid $14 board for 2 weeks.
Sunday, July 8, 1945 (age 58): Fair-- Went to church & put in 13 envelopes. Went over to Eva's in pm & she & Ethel were going over to Boxford to get plants, so I went along, but when I got to Lovelys, David's car was there so I stopped there until E. & E. came back. Wrote to Jean & Mary & mailed them.
Monday, July 9, 1945 (age 58): Hot & muggy. Saw partial eclipse of sun in morning. Lots of work--or rather i keeps coming. A lot of folding to do on Andover Inn folders, Letters from Jean & Gladys. Jean says Eleanor is coming down for a week. Wrote to John. Went to movies & saw The Man from Half Moon St. & another: Molly & Me.
Tuesday, July 10, 1945 (age 58): Hot & still muggy. Thought of taking my umbrella, but didn't & wished I had. Took long black shoes down but forgot to take them into cobblers. Thundershower at noon & again at 4.30. I waited in restaurant until ¼ of 6 & it was still raining so Mr. Christie took me home in his car. Cancellation of mortgage by Mr. Farragher, I had to sign. .Mr. O'Connell died--85.
Wednesday, July 11, 1945 (age 58): Clear & cool. Finished up folding job I guess. Got 2 dozen eggs for Eva Dea & Robert came for them. Letter from Jean & she said John called up Sat. from Brooklyn & said he had access to some films & she told him to get 828's if he could, to send to Mary. Went to the movies with Lucy Gibson to see The Enchanted Cottage. Wrote to Jean. Thayer Burridge officially dead on prison ship last October.
Thursday, July 12, 1945 (age 58): Fair & cool. Another lovely day. Still busy. Got $18.88 pay with $1.79 taken out, leaving $17.09 for 2 days work last week. Bought some plums & raspberries at Coop. Got a photo of Carla from Peggy. Wrote & thanked her.
Friday, July 13, 1945 (age 58): Warm. Met Winnie Burtt when I came out of the restaurant & walked up with her & went in. She talked a steady stream & told me about the Drapers wanting to go on a vacation but didn't like to leave Mrs. Crossland alone. I thought I might go up there nights if they wanted it that way. Eleanor Svenson brought up shoes & underclothes from Jean's--also coat & sweater. Sent card of sympathy to Mrs. O'Connell.
Saturday, July 14, 1945 (age 58): Warm. Went to Lawrence & looked around for a frame for Carla's picture & at last got one, not just what I wanted in the 10¢ store. Got a bill paid for Nellie at Sutherlands. Went over to Drapers & asked them if I'd do & Mrs. D. thought it was nice of me to come over but seems to want someone there all the time. She will think it over. She has a nice apartment on the 3rd floor.
Sunday, July 15, 1945 (age 58): Cloudy, windy & still warm. Rained last night. Wrote to Jean & put in the latest pictures she sent also the funnies. Went over to Eva's in pm & then down & got some peanuts & a quart of milk so I had crackers & milk for supper.
Monday, July 16, 1945 (age 58): A little cooler & still cloudy. Went to movies & saw Ida Lupino in From Pillow to Post. Kind of funny but I don't seem to care for movies anymore. Sent off Jean's funnies & the pictures back. Got letter from her with 3 pictures I can keep. One of John & Carla in bathtub, one of John, Peg & Carla, & Peg, John Allan & Jean & me on lawn. J.A. didn't show except top of head-- would have been good otherwise.
Tuesday, July 17, 1945 (age 58): Hot & muggy. Got a letter from Thelma Beck. Ruth said she was going to get married, but she didn't say anything in my letter. She's having a good time I guess. At Parris Island now. Went up to Lexie's after supper & we talked about whether I wanted to work steady. R. said Lexie didn't want to work because she wasn't well & Lexie said that wasn't so at all. She served me ginger ale & cookies.
Wednesday, July 18, 1945 (age 58): Still hot & sticky. This is M. Mozeen's 10th birthday. Lot of work in reading proof & making up pages. Took eggs to Eva & she wasn't there. Robert came over afterwards with the 78¢. I found out afterwards they should have been 80¢.
Thursday, July 19, 1945 (age 58): Hot & sticky. A shower about noontime & one at night at 4.30 generally every day. Letter from Jean with a couple of more pictures. Wrote to her & said I might be down next week as K. Mozeen said I didn't need to come in. Went down to Miss K's with Ethel when she came in at Carters to tell me Mary Gibson was going to stay with Miss K while she was on vacation. I had called her up saying I'd come down for a week but she is going for 2 weeks. Allen Dea is home.
Friday, July 20, 1945 (age 58): Hot & sticky. Has been a terrible week to work. I stick to everything. Got all the pages of the first Harvard book put together & a lot of galleys of the second or rather the other way around. The galleys are all put together but still a few more pages. Wrote to that Miss Goodrich who advertised but don't know whether I'll send it or not. Terrible cloudburst at 4 oclock & rained all evening. A little cooler but still sticky.
Saturday, July 21, 1945 (age 58): Another hot day. Thunder & lightning don't seem to do much good. Bath-- washing. Did seem a little cooler. Put in $25 for Anna Jane. Paid Blue Cross. Sent notice to asst. treas. of Christ Church that I was paid up to date. Letter from Ethel Hitchcock from Vermont which I answered. Lucy Gibson went over to North Andover for the weekend.
Sunday, July 22, 1945 (age 58): Fair-- a little more comfortable. Went down to Dot's in p.m. She was at her mother-in-law's but Nelson was home. He went for her on his bicycle & she came home in a taxi. Sonny came in after a while & drove me to the station to get the 7.56 train.
Monday, July 23, 1945 (age 58): Hot again. Got letter from Jean & a card from Mary before I left for the beach. Mary is at Centralia & has been sleeping most of the time. I wrote to her when I got to the beach. Came from Boston on the 12.30 train & a bus meets it at 2.17. Jean went to the movies in the evening. Cooler down here but damp & foggy. The garden is growing swell.
Tuesday, July 24, 1945 (age 58): Cloudy-- cool here. Did some mending for Jean. Went downtown & got bread & onions. Read book through Murder Will Out. Foggy at night. Jean went over to Ford's to see movies of her, Roland & the baby taken June 10 after he was christened.
Wednesday, July 25, 1945 (age 58): Foggy all morning. Sun out in p.m. Went downtown & got a ticket to Lewiston & then called Mona up & said when I'd be there. Got the 3.20 bus to Portland & a bus there for Lewiston. Got there about 7. Russell met me. Their house is in Auburn & very pleasant. Thunderstorm at night but didn't clear air. Met next-door neighbors, the Lewisfelts.
Thursday, July 26, 1945 (age 58): Still hot & foggy. Went over to Lewiston in pm & looked through stores. Rusty went to movies & we picked him up & Russell later. Saw around Bates College. Played rummy at night. Got cooler.
Friday, July 27, 1945 (age 58): Fair & cooler. Left on 9.40 for Portland & Lawrence. Got to Portland at 10.50. Train left for Law. at 11.20. Got to Law. 1.45. Had lunch at Page's restaurant & came home. Got 2 library books. Card from Mrs. Draper saying how nice it was of me to offer to come & take care of her mother. Went down to Thrift Shop & heard that Thelma was married.
Saturday, July 28, 1945 (age 58): Fair & warmer. Usual routine. I went downtown at night & while there John called up from Newport & said he & Peg would be up to spend Sunday. Got here on last train & it was raining. They sure do have the luck with the weather. Saw Harold Johnson & he said to come in Monday to work.
Sunday, July 29, 1945 (age 58): Rain & muggy. Went to Inn for dinner & rode up in taxi. Went to Art Gallery. Walked back which peeved Peg & she wouldn't come down from room till time to go. I guess she didn't like it either because I called the Theias girls & John talked with them. Left at 5.15 on bus. I went down to see Miss Cushing at Old Abbot Homestead & she took me over the place. Wrote to Jean & told her.
Monday, July 30, 1945 (age 58): Fair--warm. Went to work & had quite a bit to do. Galleys of Technique--press proofs of Harvard Business School job. Got Reader's Digest. Got pay for 2 weeks ago.

Wednesday, August 1, 1945 (age 58): Foggy & clearing. East wind keeps it cool. Went over to Eva's after supper. She & Ethel had been to Boston. Not very busy.
Thursday, August 2, 1945 (age 58): Cloudy & clearing. Warmer toward evening. Ethel & I went to the Shawsheen Manor for dinner after work. Then we went over to Charles Tucker's to look up relatives of Ethel's on the Pearson side. Nice ride.
Friday, August 3, 1945 (age 58): Hot & sticky. Cooler in even. Got fish & french fries at Pork Store & ate at Margaret's. Not much work in p.m. but Lexie was in all day setting up stuff. Went in Thrift Shop & sold 2 prs. shoes to man.
Saturday, August 4, 1945 (age 58): Clear & hot but not sticky. Washed, ironed & darned stockings. Went downtown & put Allan's check in bank. $25 for Christine & the rest I'm going to keep toward a vacation. Got 2 Jelma books out of library. Went to Union meeting in Law.
Sunday, August 5, 1945 (age 58): Clear & cool-- Lovely day. Went to church & took com. Mr. Moses back. Ethel walked over in the evening & we talked on the front porch. Then I strolled back with her. It was so clear that I could see the old moon just like a new moon in the sky at noontime.
Monday, August 6, 1945 (age 58): Cloudy & rain in pm. Didn't like movies so came home. Hap came in & cast all Lexie had set, She is through too for a while. Letter from Jean.
Tuesday, August 7, 1945 (age 58): Rain. Some work but not very busy. Read a funny book Suds in Your Eye, kind of loud but funny just the same. Letter from Miss Meserve & Jean. J's hands are bothering her a lot.
Wednesday, August 8, 1945 (age 58): Cleared off. Went to see The Corn Is Green at movies-- Bette Davis. Very good. Had seen The March of Time somewhere before.
Thursday, August 9, 1945 (age 58): Got pay & paid Irma Beene for 2-piece dress. $4.98. [After news of both Hiroshima and Nagasaki bombing] Looks as if Jap war might end soon. Too bad it didn't end a year ago or never begun, for so many fine boys might have been alive today.
Friday, August 10, 1945 (age 58): Fair. Not much to do. Went to Thrift Shop at night. Bought coat 7.50 & had it laid away as I didn't pay for it. Got a night shirt which I brought home to Nellie for George. She thinks it will fit him. It was soiled but perfectly whole. Taken sick at night & had to go to bathroom 4 or 5 times throwing up & going the other way. Probably was the chocolates I ate for lunch for dessert. Had fish & chips at Margaret's but she was late because Betty Cole hadn't come back from hairdressers. Letter from Jean.
Saturday, August 11, 1945 (age 58): Fair & hot. Stayed in bed all day. Just had black coffee & iced tea. Took several alkaseltzers. Feverish all day. Cooled off at night but weak as the dickens. Letter from Jean. Wants me to get soap pdr & baby applesauce if I can.
Sunday, August 12, 1945 (age 58): Fair & hot. Got up today but back aches a lot. Fever gone. Ate dinner & it tasted good. Laid around in afternoon & wrote to Jean & sent a Townsman to Jean Dundas about Alice Coutt's death. Lucy Gibson took them to the mailbox in the even.
Monday, August 13, 1945 (age 58): Hot & muggy. Some breeze. I called up Louie & told him I wouldn't be in yesterday, so hung around all day. Felt a little better after I'd had a bath. Lucy said she could get me some Duz & Ivory Flakes at Greeleys, also some applesauce for John Allan, all to be sent to Jean as she wants them.
Tuesday, August 14, 1945 (age 58): Fair-- hot. Victory over Japan. War ends. Phil Cole came in looking as if he had just got out of bed & said we'd better go home, but qualified it later and said if the fire whistle blew we would go. It didn't blow till after 7 pm so we got in a day's work. Word came over the networks at 7 oclock that Japan had surrendered. Gen MacArthur made supreme commander in Pacific. Lucy & I went downtown & the town went wild but no drunks so far as I could see. Seemed like an old-fashioned 4th of July.
Wednesday, August 15, 1945 (age 58): Cloudy & hot. Wrote to Jean, Mary & John. Heard from Louie that we wouldn't work tomorrow. Stayed at home most of day.
Thursday, August 16, 1945 (age 58): Clear-- cool in a.m. & warmed up during day. Went to Boston just to have a look around & walked down Beacon St. through Louisburg Square to Mt. Vernon St. Saw where a fire was in one of the apartment buildings. Got pretty tired, but it whiled away some tome. Went to movies there.
Friday, August 17, 1945 (age 58): Clear-- warmer. Back to work. A lot of fuss about the spt on the Harvard job. Hap set most of it over. All out of alignment. Got eggs for Eva & Nellie. Went to Thrift Shop for an hour but no business, although there had been all day. Took in $120. Got my coat--black one & paid 7.50 for it. Letter from Mary. Said Chris & Butch had tonsils out.
Saturday, August 18, 1945 (age 58): Birthday of young Minerva Russell--17. Fair & cool. Dubbed around home as I felt so tired. It was a beautiful day. Letter from Jean. Got package done up for express & he came before it was done. Hope he will come Monday. Went downtown & got some toys to send out to Mary for the kids. Etta gave me some books. Got that package done up but will send it Monday. Lucy went over to North Andover.
Sunday, August 19, 1945 (age 58): Dickie O'Donnell'--10.Fair-- foggy in morning. Went to church & in pm went over to Eva's but she wasn't there so took a walk around Wash. ave. & home. had a nervous spell at night & couldn't sleep. Cried a lot thinking of Allan-- 5 months today since he was missing.
Monday, August 20, 1945 (age 58): Fair & warm. Looked like the wreck of something & felt miserable all day. Went to movies & saw one picture. Slept pretty good as I was all in. Sent box to Christine with toys in it. A felt sticker game, some books, & a truck for Butchie.
Tuesday, August 21, 1945 (age 58): Fair & hot. An awful day in the sun. Quite busy with Harvard Bus. School 2nd book. Night awfully warm. Got box off to Jean with soap pdr & baby applesauce.
Wednesday, August 22, 1945 (age 58): Birthday of George Howell-- 62. Fair & still hot though a breeze. Letter from Jean. I called her up in evening & found out Johnsons were there. Louie said I didn't need to work the rest of the week so I thought I'd go down if I could change permanent to Thurs. a.m. Got Harvard book all printed.
Thursday, August 23, 1945 (age 58): Cloudy & cooler. Went down at 9 oclock to see if I could change permanent but couldn't get it till this pm. It sure takes a long time. Got chicken pie for Etta at Pork store. Got my pay by waiting around in bookstore. 4 days last week. Card from Lexie from Hampton Beach.
Friday, August 24, 1945 (age 58): Cloudy. Went down to Jean's & got there just after the Johnsons left. The baby sure is growing. Jean's neck & arms bother her. I gave her a rub which helped some.
Saturday, August 25, 1945 (age 58): Rain. Did ironing & dishes. Baby fussy at times & doesn't like to sleep so much. Jean's friend Marty & her sister & baby called. Roland did errands.
Sunday, August 26, 1945 (age 58): Cloudy & cleared in pm. Cooler. Darned 8 prs fo Roland's socks. Did dishes & gave Jean a good rub in morning which helped her some I guess. Roland took baby for a walk. I was going on the 12 oc. bus but Jean said R. would drive me to Portsmouth which he did & Jean & JA came along for the ride i n Ford's car. Had supper in Waldorf across from North Station. Tom Dea was there. I met Ethel Hitchcock. H. in North Station when I went for train. She had just come from Andover.
Monday, August 27, 1945 (age 58): Clear & cool. Went back to work but very little to do. Worked on Bishop--5 forms. Found mistake in first which Ruth hadn't seen in table of contents, but it wasn't printed. Eleander's store damaged with water from broken pipe above. Went to movies & saw Brewster's Millions which was funny.
Tuesday, August 28, 1945 (age 58): Fair--warmer. Lexie came in to work. She got everything set up that was ready-- Abbot Treas. statement stuff. Got a good book at bookstore about the swampland people of Florida. Guess I'll keep it. Inherit the Wind. Also showed the books they are selling for 50¢ to Annie Buchan & she bought 3. Wrote to Jean. Got the steering wheel light fixed at Hill's.
Wednesday, August 29, 1945 (age 58): Birthday of Ethel Howell-- 57. Warm-- hot toward night & a warm night to sleep. Wrote again to Jean telling her to put Dad's watch away if the Svensons come down. [She refers to her late husband as "Dad."] Some folding to do. The invitation to the reception to the new Free ch. pastor on Sept. 26. Got the Bishop & the Lowell Genl Hosp. books done. Took a book down to Ethel, also sent her a funny card. Story about Revolutionary times.
Thursday, August 30, 1945 (age 58): Hot-- Thundershower in morning. Cooled off some but it got warm again. I brought home a qt of milk & made applesauce out of some of the fallen apples but they weren't much good. Found some corn & [illegible] & cut up tomatoes. Lucy brought home [illegible]. She got a letter from Nellie. Got 24 for pay today.
Friday, August 31, 1945 (age 58): Cloudy warm-- cooler at night. Had supper alone as Lucy went to King's Daughters. Letter from Jean & Reader's Digest-- Condensation of the Colliers article about the Franklin. Louie said might not work on Tuesday. Paid $5 to union for month. Bought 2 books-- Golden Apples of the Sea & Inherit the Wind 50¢ each at bookstore.
Saturday, September 1, 1945 (age 58): Hot & muggy. Did some washing. Took a bath & got dinner for Lucy. Went to Lawrence in pm & stayed for 1½ hrs. Too hot to stay long. Letters from Mary & Jean. Mary is going to school there in Centralia, with the kids. She felt pretty bad on VJ Day but still hopes for Allan's return. I wonder if she really does, I don't see how she can. Listened to radio & heard the signing of the surrender of Japan. Adm. Halsey would have liked to have kicked their faces in. Heard President Truman too.
Sunday, September 2, 1945 (age 58): Cloudy & rainy. Didn't go to church. Neither did Lucy. Did some ironing. Got dinner & hung around all day. Wrote to Mary & Jean & enclosed Mary's letter. Weather miserable but got cooler at night. Listened to radio where the Bing Crosby, Frank Sinastra & Frances Langford sang for the VJ Day program--White Christmas. We gather together to ask the Lord's Blessing. Pres. Truman spoke again.
Monday, September 3, 1945 (age 58): John Allan 4 mos. old. Fair & cool. Went to movies & saw 2 pretty good pictures. Ethel sat with me. Edith Valpey came up & visited with Edith. Listened in evening to Cavalcade of America-- Firestone & Telephone Hour music good. Bought a Globe & saw the death notice of John Russell's sister Annie of Quincy on Sept. 1.
Tuesday, September 4, 1945 (age 58): Getting warmer. Called up Louie & he said didn't think there would be work so wrote to Miss Meserve that I'd be up on Thursday. Carters came home. Nellie looks better & seems brighter. I helped Miss Humphreys a little & she gave me 2 hats a kimona & I bought a silver backed mirror,
Wednesday, September 5, 1945 (age 58): Warm. Got clothes together & took a box full down to be sent up to Jackson. Went to movies & saw Christmas in Connecticut. Funny but very improbable & Two OClock Courage, a mystery, both good. Slept good all night,
Thursday, September 6, 1945 (age 58): Hot. Had Martha Billings take me to the train as I couldn't get a taxi. Changed at Lawrence but not at Dover, only moved back to last car. They hadn't got my letter so the station master at Intervale telephoned over & Ronnie came for me. Business good here but the waitress is pretty slow & forgets things. Saw several old friends & a lot of new faces.
Friday, September 7, 1945 (age 58): Hot. I slept comfortable in a.m. by staying in the house, but it was s hot my head ached. Couldn't go in room as it was like an oven but cooled off at night. Wrote to Nellie, Mrs. Gibson & Ethel on cards.
Saturday, September 8, 1945 (age 58): Hot again. Repeat yesterday. Did get in a snooze on the north piazza as a breeze sprang up but died down soon. Cards to Ruth & Lexie. Got govt. check Nellie sent up. Walked around mile at night with Mrs. McNair. Clouds coming up.
Sunday, September 9, 1945 (age 58): Cloudy & cool. Went to church with a Mrs. Davis & Miss Blake from Hampton, here in village. A Mr. & Mrs. Baker friends of McNairs at table. Very friendly. The McNairs are all hot & bothered over having to change rooms. Mrs. Callahan & her son have moved down to Nesselnook.
Monday, September 10, 1945 (age 58): Cloudy & cool. Had a ride with the McNairs, the Bakers & Mary Ward over to Berlin. The McNairs have got their rooms straightened out as they are to have the room with the porch & Mrs. McN. got it twisted as she didn't hear right. The Paton girls came Sunday & they have the room off the porch downstairs where the McNairs thought they were going. Letter from Jean.
Tuesday, September 11, 1945 (age 58): Cloudy & cool. Letters from Nellie & Lucy. Miss Farmer's brother Everett died on Friday. Nellie thinks the insulation makes the kitchen cooler on the hot days. Said Louie was asking when I was coming back. Wrote to Jean. Didn't go down to breakfast as I had a headache. The table girl came up to see if I wanted anything but I didn't. Mrs. Corris also came up.
Wednesday, September 12, 1945 (age 58): Clear & cooler. Beautiful day. Took 2 dresses over to laundress to wash & iron. Wrote to Nellie & Lucy. Put money in Miss Meserve's safe. Sent card to Jerry as I heard he won't be up till the 23rd. Man died here last night of a heart attack--a Mr. Dearnorn of Salem. Letters from Mrs Preston & Minerva re-sent from Andover. Letter from Jean. Was all alone most of the p.m. till the Stotts & Majerisons came.
Thursday, September 13, 1945 (age 58): Clear & cool-- some clouds. The schoolteachers are hiking to Mt. Wash. Not so good looking up there, but it may burn off. Got my breakfast in record time. Had a ride to Berlin with the McNears & Bakers & Mary Ward. Beautiful moon at night. I guess this ride was yesterday as I went up to the falls with a Mrs. McClay & we soaked our feet. She is a Christian Scientist I guess. Widow. Comes from Newton, very pleasant.
Friday, September 14, 1945 (age 58): Cloudy & rain. Stayed in most of the day & did it rain at times. Miss Bianchi drove me over to the laundry to get my 2 dresses. Gathered in the living rooms at night. I went to bed at 9.30.
Saturday, September 15, 1945 (age 58): Rain. Started at 7.40 and drove home with Miss Bianchi who was coming home through Andover to Wellesley. Got here in 4 hours. Called up the Inn & made reservations for lunch which she enjoyed very much. It made a break for her. Hurricane on way to Florida & the wind at times was heavy. Sultry now. Got cooler at night. Walked downtown & met Lexie & went along with her. Got some candy to have on table when we played rummy at night.
Sunday, September 16, 1945 (age 58): Clear & cool. Went to church. Lucy went to relatives in Reading. Saw Ethel in pm at Eva's.
Monday, September 17, 1945 (age 58): Fair. Went down to Jean's & the baby sure is growing. Roland home with his ulcers upsetting him again. Baby can sit up in the high chair & eat. He's so cute.
Tuesday, September 18, 1945 (age 58): Cloudy. Soaked feet in water in the little cove where they used to bring in the fishing boats.
Wednesday, September 19, 1945 (age 58): Repeat yesterday practically. People leaving the beach but it's nice here.
Thursday, September 20, 1945 (age 58): Fair. Helped Jean-- did some ironing-- felt kind of crampy in one leg after standing awhile.
Friday, September 21, 1945 (age 58): Cloudy-- Not such a good week at Jackson so maybe it's as well I came home. Sent a letter to Mary with $5 in it to buy something for Janna. Soaked feet in salt water. Maybe that's what started the diarrhea spell.
Saturday, September 22, 1945 (age 58): Birthday of George A. Carter-- 70. Fair. Ate well although I had a diarrhea spell in the night.
Sunday, September 23, 1945 (age 58): Fair. Ate all right but shouldn't have I suppose for I had some more diarrhea. Walked downtown though & mailed a letter to Jerry & one to little Janna from Jean who sent a birthday card out to Mary to send one to her.
Monday, September 24, 1945 (age 58): Cloudy. Stayed in bed during day & Nellie called up at night & said Louie had called & wanted me to work-- but I told her I couldn't. Jean called doctor & he said to get me some milk of bismuth which she did but not enough.
Tuesday, September 25, 1945 (age 58): Warm & cloudy. Had another spell of bathroom sitting-- 7 or 8 times one after another during the night. Feel pretty mean but meant to go home but Jean wouldn't let me. Just as well I suppose. Edith Valpey died suddenly. She was at Nellie's yesterday. Died just after she had her bath after getting up & waiting for her breakfast.
Wednesday, September 26, 1945 (age 58): Birthday of Miss Kimball-- 87. Warm & cloudy-- cleared at night & got cooler. Still felt kind of weak. Called up Nellie & said I wouldn't be at work this week, but might come home tomorrow or Friday. Jean got me some more milk of bismuth & changed a $10 bill so I put $5 in letter to John for his birthday.
Thursday, September 27, 1945 (age 58): Birthday of Harold Johnson's baby boy born. Cloudy & clear. Got home at 4.30 & took taxi from station. Called up Jean & told her I was ok & she said Ethel & Eva were there about 2.30. Letters from Miss Bianchi, Virginia & one from Mabel Shoolbred also one to a Miss H. C. Edmonds 14 Bartlet St., but I didn't know who it was. Some maid named Catherine 24 Royal St. Providence. Not imp. just acknowledging receipt of check. No one here when I telephoned after I got here. Ethel came in in the even. She & Eva had been down to the beach & I could have ridden home with them, but maybe it's just as well.
Friday, September 28, 1945 (age 58): Birthday of Dicky Kinville--Dorothy's baby-- 2 years. Had the doctor as I had to go to bathroom several times during night. He ordered some more chalky medicine from Dalton's & he brought it up at noon. Said to change my diet to one with meat in it. Had fish chowder at noon & Lucy G. brought up some beef broth powder & it tasted good. Called Lexie at night. Louie is away for weekend so won't know whether there will be work or not. Letter from Mary giving me Janna's address with Janie. Wrote to Jean & Janie.
Saturday, September 29, 1945 (age 58): Birthday of Nelson Edmands Jr.-- 23. Fair & quite a breeze in a.m. but warm. Thunderstorm in pm & getting cooler. Went out on piazza this a.m. & read paper & knitted 2 squares. Wiped dishes. Paid 2 weeks board. Took a short walk around Summer & Whittier Sts. Thunderstorm in afternoon & got cooler. Wrote a congratulatory note to Barbara & Harold Johnson over the new baby.
Sunday, September 30, 1945 (age 58): Birthday of Ernest John Edmands-- 28. Fair & cool. Nellie had a boiled dinner & I ate carrots & parsnips & beets for the vegetables. It tasted good. Went over to Eva's for a little while & took over the brown tam Miss Humphreys gave me. Stayed only a short time.
Monday, October 1, 1945 (age 58): Cold & rainy. Went to work. Quite a little on hand. Cold in Press so the desk was moved in with Ruth where the fire was. When I woke up I thought it was 6.30 this morning & got up & washed, but found it was only 5.30 so I went back to bed for an hour. Catherine came in & said I had some pay for vacation coming besides my regular week's pay. I said to keep it till Thurs. Made appointment for hair wash for tomorrow.

Wednesday, October 3, 1945 (age 58): Birthday of Anna Jane Edmands-- 1 year old. Clear & cold-- Nice weather now. Wrote to Jean when I found no letter from her.
Thursday, October 4, 1945 (age 58): Clear & cold. Letter from Jean. Crib came. Had a wicked headache. Miss Humphreys wanted me to go to supper at Christ Church with her but I didn't feel able. She gave me 2 fans. Started a beret for Christine with blue yarn. Did pretty well on it. Got back pay & 7 days vacation pay that I wasn't expecting. Gave Johnnie F. 50¢ for baseball pool.
Friday, October 5, 1945 (age 58): Would be Susie's 41st wed. anniv. Clear-- warmer in pm. Had another headache at noon-- Got some fish & french fries & ate at Margaret's. Went to Thrift Shop at night & sold a pair of shoulder guards to a boy. Finished beret for Chris. Put $25 each in bank for Chris & Janna. Chris is up to $100 now.
Saturday, October 6, 1945 (age 58): Cloudy & warmer. Letter from Jean. Roland home from Malden where he went with his sister. I changed my room around & got some pictures out of the attic. Put up the balls. Went downtown & got a box of candy for George & Nellie for their wedding anniversary.
Sunday, October 7, 1945 (age 58): 42nd wedding anniversary of Nellie & George Carter. The Meehans weren't here to dinner although they gave the Carters some flowers. We had it in dining room. Didn't go out & Ethel came over. Wanted me to stay with Miss Kimball Tues. so she could go to Georgetown to Eastern Star meet. I said I would. Fair.
Monday, October 8, 1945 (age 58): Fair & cool. Had to have wood fire in Press. Worked an hour overtime as they wanted to get out the Transit. Got Allan's check. Bought some plastic wood & put some in hole in desk. Hope it will stay. Lucy went to King's Daughters so we didn't play cards.
Tuesday, October 9, 1945 (age 58): Fair & a rainstorm in morning-- cooler afterwards. Went down to Miss Kimball's to supper, back to Press for about 40 minutes & then down to stay overnight. Ethel didn't get home till 11.30. She had a good time. Miss K. & I played solitaire. Had to work after supper but didn't get in till 8.45 in morning.
Wednesday, October 10, 1945 (age 58): Fair & a little warmer. Letter from Jean & a thankyou note from Barbara Johnson for the baby dress hangers I gave her. Two years ago I was starting out for California thinking I was going to live there. I wonder if it would have made any difference about Allan if I had stayed.
Thursday, October 11, 1945 (age 58): Cloudy off and on. Still no heat at Press except stove. Working on boiler. Louie went home this noon with a cold. Card from Jean saying R. went into Boston with his sister yesterday, so she must be going home. Bill for Blue Cross. Bought Cass Timberlane at bookstore. Made out a list of Chris. cards I'm sending for at Robert Kellogg Co.
Friday, October 12, 1945 (age 58): Rain. Went down to Jean's & got there just after the telegram came about Allan. The Navy presumes him killed in action. Wrote to Mary & Jean wrote too. Also to John.
Saturday, October 13, 1945 (age 58): Fair. Wheeled John Allan downtown & sent letters to Mary & John. The baby didn't go to sleep & kicked off his clothes. He's full of it. I seemed awfully tired. I guess I haven't cried any more for years than I have this past 6 months. Jean & Roland went over to the doctors to see if R. Xray had come back. I did the dishes & some ironing. Eastern Mass. strike. Sent off order for Xmas cards to Robert Kellogg Springfield.
Sunday, October 14, 1945 (age 58): Fair & rain in pm. Took noon bus to Boston & out on train. Took taxi from station as it was raining. Letter from John when I got home. He's Lt. Comdr. now on the U.S.S. Hauson DD832 executive officer. Bill from Dr. Blake $3.00. Mrs. Ailman wanted me to look up a room or apt for her & I telephoned the new nursing home & she can take her so I telephoned Jean. Also wrote to Jean & John, as he may not have gotten my last note about Allan.
Monday, October 15, 1945 (age 58): Fair & cool-- looked around for a place for Mrs. Ailman but no place except the nursing home. Not a private bath there. I telephoned to Mrs. Ailman, but she may have a place in Rochester, so I told Mrs. Colloten at the nursing home. Sent John's letter along with mine to Jean.
Tuesday, October 16, 1945 (age 58): George Christie's 50 wed. anniv. Fair & cloudy at night. Went to South Church Harvest Supper with Lucy Gibson at night. Went over to Miss Kimball's for a minute. Had turkey supper & lots of it. Still cold at Press but the men are working they say. Letter from Jean returning John's.
Wednesday, October 17, 1945 (age 58): 17 years ago I got message from hospital that Dad [her late husband] was worse--so Harold Johnson drove me down. Now I am getting Allan's death notice ready. Day & date the same as 17 years ago. Went into Townsman Press & showed telegram to Grover, also gave him what I had written. He sent a boy home with me to get Allan's picture I had of him by his plane. George Carney in the Press today. He's a lot thinner than when I saw him last. Told him about allan. Louie back & there sure was a lot of work to do.
Thursday, October 18, 1945 (age 58): Fair. Sent off notice to Tribune about Allan. Don't know how much they will put in. Had hair washed & some more curls put in where the cold was didn't take. It took so long & they were so busy I'm not going again for a long time. Letter from Mary-- she feels pretty low. She got the telegram when she got home from school. Wrote to Mr. Bailey.
Friday, October 19, 1945 (age 58): Fair & hot. Dad [her late husband] died 17 years ago. Letter from Mrs. Hawes. She said Jane asked her to come over when the telegram came. She said that Mr. H. still thinks he will be found.
A cold came on during the day & I felt miserable. Glad to get home & went to bed right after supper.
Nothing in Tribune. Wrote to Mary telling her about Dad dying 17 years ago. Sent her $25.
Saturday, October 20, 1945 (age 58): Fair, hot in sun but cool breeze. Townsman came & Nellie brought it up & I showed her the piece about Allan. It was well written. We both cried. I felt miserable with the cold & just drank orange juice all day. Box of Christmas cards came from Kellogg. Sat out on piazza this noon.
Sunday, October 21, 1945 (age 58): 17 years ago Dad [her late husband] buried. It was a beautiful day today as it was 17 years ago when the family sat on the piazza at Carmel Road during the service. Cold has eased up a little but nose still sore. Wrote to Comdr. Joe Taylor formerly of the Franklin now of the Brunswick Naval Air Station in Brunswick Maine to see if he could tell me any more about Allan.
Mr. Moses came in. Mr. McCullom had seen the piece in the Townsman & told him. He brought some flowers from the church, whit chypan & autumn leaves. Called up Bill Doherty this noon & asked him to find out why the piece about Allan hadn't been put in the Trib.
Monday, October 22, 1945 (age 58): Cloudy part of the day. Bill Doherty said that the Trib. man had received the letter about Allan but anyway there was a long piece in the paper tonight. I wrote Elmer thanking him for writing the piece in the Townsman. Letter from Jean Dundas. Wrote to her & told her. I sent the Townsman with Alice Coutts death in it. Didn't go to work till this afternoon. Got a ride down with Mrs. Billings. Pretty weak but not any worse.
Tuesday, October 23, 1945 (age 58): Cloudy. Got cooler in pm. I came home to dinner & Nellie didn't have a place set. She didn't hear me say the night before I'd be home. I had enough though but got my supper at the lunch counter in Ford's bakery. Nellie has a bad cold. Don't know whether she got it from me or not. Sympathy card from the Davidsons of Essex st. Letter from Jean. The minister at York Beach is going to Lewiston. Wrote to Jean, Dot, Mrs. Davidson & Hon. Mrs. Rogers.
Wednesday, October 24, 1945 (age 58): Rain. No mail. Nellie better but hoarse like me. Lexie wasn't in, but we are still busy. Got some red candle wax on the bureau scarf, so washed it out the best I could & put on a scarf I had in my trunk I haven't used since California.
Thursday, October 25, 1945 (age 58): Rain. Letter of sympathy from Miss Eades. Card from Mrs. Craik. Wrote to them & to Jean also to Mona to see if she could tell me any more Comdr. Taylor said. Bought Yankee from Olympus at bookstore.
Friday, October 26, 1945 (age 58): Rain. Had to keep stove going to keep dampness out. Went to Thrift Shop for an hour. Card from Annabelle Richardson.
Saturday, October 27, 1945 (age 58): Fair & windy. Went to Boston & had David look up my nose & he packed it & got me some penicillin & gave me a prescription for nose drops. We had dinner at the cafeteria in the hospital & then after he had tended to someone else he took me in his jalopy out to South Boston to see the Wasp Aircraft Carrier. Crowds of people. We didn't go on, but she is a huge ship. Went out to their apt. for supper & Eleanor cooked chicken, squash & potato & had fruit salad for dessert. They drove me up to the North station to get the 7.50 train. Letters from Janie, Jean & Vet. Asso. from Frank Markey.
Sunday, October 28, 1945 (age 58): Fair & cool. Didn't go to church as my head is still stuffy. Wrote to Jean, Janie & walked up to Summer St. to mail them but didn't see Ethel's car in Eva's driveway so walked across the field into Elm St. & home. Nellie & George went out with Dave & Gertie May for a ride. Ethel was at Georgetown.
Monday, October 29, 1945 (age 58): Fair & warmer. Heat at the Press. It even got too warm. Plenty to do. Ethel came in to tell me she is going Nov. 6. Letters from Mary & Mr. Bailey. Chris is going to dancing school & starting to make her Christmas presents. Has a special one for me, bless her heart. Bought some yarns to see if I could make the 2-needle mittens & I had a great time trying to knit & purl but finally remembered how. Eyes ached though when I went to bed. Wrote to Mary.

Wednesday, October 31, 1945 (age 58): Fair. Quite a lot of work, especially on the presses. Letters from Jean & Minerva. Wrote to M. & said why I hadn't written was because I hadn't been feeling well. Catalogs from various places where I've sent for stuff.
Thursday, November 1, 1945 (age 58): Fair. Went to tea at Miss Beane's store as it was her 10th anniversary in business. Saw Eva there & she said Ethel was on Park street in the car so went up & spoke to her. Went up to Eva's for supper. Telephoned Mr. Moses I'd thought of Nov. 18 for the memorial service. He said he would tend to it. Eva said it was hard on the Legion fellows to go to these services--a queer remark to make, I think. Letters from Comdr. Taylor & Jean with snaps of the baby. Wrote to them.
Friday, November 2, 1945 (age 58): Cloudy & fairly warm. Paid union dues. Came home to dinner as Nellie had fish chowder. Met Peg Sweeney after work & she spoke about Allan. Letters from Aunt Annie & Arthur expressing regrets. Worked in Thrift Shop. Bought pound of candy & put in box I sent Mary. Cost 84¢ to send it.
Saturday, November 3, 1945 (age 58): Cloudy & warm. John Allan 6 months old. Letter from Jean. Bath-- washed hair, washed clothes & ironed some which were dry. Took an old umbrella of Nellie's to Law. to have a new cover put on. Got some eye do (murine) talcum kleenex & teel. Too tired to go to union meeting. Bob Dryermond's youngest girl Gladys married to David Markert at Christ Church. This pen leaks like everything. [inkblots on page]
Sunday, November 4, 1945 (age 58): Snow-- started in with rain the night before & then snowed most all day. I wrote letters & telephoned Ethel that I guess we wouldn't go out to eat. She agreed & said Eva was going as far as Washington with them. Wrote letters & went out & mailed them but that's all I did. Listened to Ford Music Hour on Lucy's radio.
Monday, November 5, 1945 (age 58): Fair & colder. Not much work. Heat so heavy in morning had to shut off radiator & open window at top. Sent off funnies to Jean. Letter from Mrs. Haviland wanting me to come down Sat. & stay over Sun. Don't know whether to or not. Wrote to Jean about it. Went down to Miss Kimball's & bade her & Ethel goodbye. Mrs. Henry Dea & Ruth were there.
Tuesday, November 6, 1945 (age 58): Fair. Called up Carl Stevens & he said Mr. Moses had called him up about the memorial service for Allan. Ethel & Miss Kimball left today for Florida. Eva goes with them for a ways. Bought 2 books at bookstore. Great Son & The Red House mystery. 75¢ each.
Wednesday, November 7, 1945 (age 58): Cloudy. Not much to do at Press so Louie said I could have rest of week off. I wrote Mrs. Haviland telling her I was going down to Jean's. Would see her later. Catalogs from the various places I've bought stuff from are coming in.
Thursday, November 8, 1945 (age 58): Fair & warm. Took 11.19 train to Boston & had dinner at Filene's. Bought a cute scarf there for Christine. Took Ladies Home J. down to Jean & the funnies. Bought some soap bubble mixture in Liggetts to show the baby. Got to Jean's about 6 & she was surprised to see me.
Friday, November 9, 1945 (age 58): Cloudy. Jean & I went over to the village & got groceries & she paid some bills & then we stopped in at Mrs. Andrews coming back & stayed about an hour with J.A. showing off his little smile & tricks. Baby tickled with soap bubbles.
Saturday, November 10, 1945 (age 58): Cloudy. Took bath in a.m. & helped around house. Jean cleaned upstairs & Roland did the wash. Jean made hash for supper. Got mittens done so gave them to Roland.
Sunday, November 11, 1945 (age 58): Cloudy & rain. Jean cleaned up downstairs & she & R. went for a short walk in pm & I snoozed. Tried to knit small mittens in evening & got all nervous over them but finally with Jean's help got one on its way to being done. Baby's first tooth is through. He even bit his lip. Had Mrs. Andrews at dinner. Jean cooked a boiled dinner & made a pecan pie.
Monday, November 12, 1945 (age 58): Rain. Come home on bus from York Beach to Lawrence. Got to Andover just after 3 oclock. Nice ride. Lucy didn't have to work all day. She was writing Christmas cards when I got here. Nellie says the Coles are moving in by degrees next door. Minerva telephoned 10.30 that she would be up. Wrote Jean, Arthur & Dot. Mr. Hamblin died.
Tuesday, November 13, 1945 (age 58): Foggy & cloudy. Telephoned Mrs. McCullom at Christ Ch. parish house & told her I was going to give the flowers for next Sunday. Ordered them in Playdon's. Talked with Mr. Moses. Wrote to Mr. Henry, Helen & Belle & put piece about memorial service in Townsman. Got letters from Ethel Harrington and Mrs. Johnstone in Washington. Also a box of Christmas cards that I am sending back as I did not order them. Wrote to Virginia & Eleanor. Sonny Edmands came up on his motorcycle last night & said he would go down for J. & R. Sat. but when we called J. up she said they had Miss Chamberlain's car.
Wednesday, November 14, 1945 (age 58): Rain. Wrote to David & Eleanor. Sent sympathy card to Mrs. Hamblin. Went down to Mr. Moses & gave him Allan's record. Had lunch at bakery. Put up notice on clock about memorial service. Did quite a lot of inserting of Phillips Academy folders about Pearson hall.
Thursday, November 15, 1945 (age 58): Cleared off cold-- No heat in Press as something went wrong with the pump. As usual on a cold day. Had a lot of inserting to do. Letter from John & postcard from Ethel. John feels as I do that Allan was the victim of circumstances & I wrote & told Senator Walsh about how I felt about it. Not that it will do any good now. Wrote to Jean & told her too.
Friday, November 16, 1945 (age 58): Fair but started out as a blizzard this a.m. Came home to dinner as Nellie had fish cakes. Letter from Mrs. Haviland said she was sorry I wasn't down but to let her know when I could come. Joe Doherty called & said the Navy Chaplain would be out but for Mr. Moses to call him, so I told Mr. M. & he said he would. Letter from Mary when I got home telling about the kids.
Saturday, November 17, 1945 (age 58): Cloudy-- some rain. Jean & Roland came up with baby & stayed at Johnsons. Baby pretty funny on acct of teeth. They came down in afternoon after I went up there & listened to ball game-- Navy & Army both won. Sympathy card from Mr. & Mrs. George Brown on Essex St.
Sunday, November 18, 1945 (age 58): Memorial service for Allan. Rain in morning but cleared off in afternoon. Eleanor Ramsdell Tucker came for Memorial Service from Baldwinsville. John & Minerva came from New Bedford all in time for dinner. Luckily Nellie had enough. Jean & R. were down with the baby. He felt a little better.
Service at 4 oclock for Allan. Poor John Allan was left at Johnsons & cried all the time. He would have been better in church. Jean felt the worst though when she got back & found it out. Quite a number out-- Legion, Press, Dot, Sonny, Edie from Melrose Highlands, Aunt Flora from Wakefield, Belle & Helen, Barbara, Katherine, & her husband from North Andover, Captain Stone, head of chaplains at 1st Naval District came out with his wife and said a few words. We sang "Onward Christian Soldiers," "Fight the Good Fight," & "Stand Up for Jesus." Flowers from the Press & the Pauls. Gave those to Jean to take home. They went after having supper at Johnsons. John, Min, El, & I went down to Shawsheen Manor and then I went up to Lovelys & D. drove me back.

Lt. Commander Allan C. Edmands, U.S.N.
This afternoon at 4 o'clock, a Memorial Service for Lt. Commander Allan C. Edmands, U.S.N., will be held in the church. As a boy, Commander Edmands was a member of the choir and the Sunday School and during his school days was a leader in many school activities. Graduating from Punchard in 1929, he entered the Navy as an enlisted man in March 1930 and was accepted from the ranks for the U.S. Naval Academy in June of 1931. He was graduated with the rank of Ensign on June 6, 1935, and served on the battleship West Virginia and the destroyers Boggs and Chandler. In World War II, Commander Edmands was aboard the U.S.S. Astoria when it was sunk at Guadalcanal on August 9, 1942. After serving on the converted carrier Suwanee for a year, he was transferred to the Franklin. On March 19 of this year the ship was struck by Japanese suicide bombers and badly damaged. He was reported missing as of that dater and a recent communication from the Navy Department states "… that Lt. Commander Edmands lost his life as a result of enemy action." He was greater Lawrence's highest ranking Naval officer to be killed in World War II.
Monday, November 19, 1945 (age 58): Cloudy & warm. Hot as tophet in Press. Wrote to John, Mary & thankyou cards to Mrs. George Brown, Carlton Kimball & James Christie who ushered at church. Went down & got one program Mrs. Moses found for me and asked about paying anyone. No mail.
Tuesday, November 20, 1945 (age 58): Fair & warm. Finished up Pine Manor & the Bishop. Quite a number of Christmas cards to do.
Wednesday, November 21, 1945 (age 58): Cloudy. Worked in a.m. & went down to Jean's in p.m. Nellie brought down letter which had her fur coat ticket in it so I got it for her. Had lunch in the Ambassador. Got to beach about 6 as usual. Roland came along with car. They have a new tire so it's not so bad. Baby has the playpen from Fords & he likes it. Card of sympathy from the British War Veterans Aux.
Thursday, November 22, 1945 (age 58): Thanksgiving. Rain-- awful storm of wind & rain-- washed holes in driveway near beach. Walked down to see it when it had let up a little. Jean cooked a nice turkey & I brought some home & we had all the fixings. I took down some salted nuts & hard candy. Nellie & George went up to the Inn for dinner. Lucy went over to the Tuckers in N.A.
Friday, November 23, 1945 (age 58): Fair. Helped Jean what I could. Baby kind of fussy & didn't sleep very well. Jean is pretty tired. She had a chance to go downtown while I had him. Got a stroller from the baby's aunt Olive [sister of Roland]. He sits up like a little man. They have put it away. Letter from Jerry.Some of last Sunday's programs from Mr. Moses.
Saturday, November 24, 1945 (age 58): Sue would have been 64. Fair. Left the beach at 12.19. Roland was putting on the storm windows. Jean washed curtains. She took me down to the station. Went to Boston. Got a pair of Burt's special shoe. Tried Selby's but they didn't have any. Got 2 sets of pajamas, one for John & one for Roland in Jordan's. Got 3 bangle bracelets for Mary. Had a lunch in Jordan's Spumin[/] room--no smoking there, Came home on 5.14 from Boston. Waldo gone to his aunt's for the winter.
Sunday, November 25, 1945 (age 58): Fair & cool. Beautiful day-- walked down to church with Lucy & then walked back to my own as I was early. Eleanor was there & I showed her after church what pieces of cloth I wanted. Mr. Moses said to send just a note to the McCoulie boy so I did. Wrote one to Mrs. Davidson thanking her for the B.W.V. Aux. card. Wrote to Jean. Jerry & Abbie Burtt who is in the Baker Meme[?]. Went over to Eva's but she doesn't know Ethel's address yet. May join the Legion Aux. Had popcorn over there.
Monday, November 26, 1945 (age 58): Fair & cool. Heard that Mr. Storey died. Not much to do at Press. Sent airmail letter to Mary saying things were coming. Cashed B&M check for $2.98 return from Intervale. Looked at wheelbarrow in Hills & ordered one for Butchy. Got some more yarn green & yellow at Yarn Shop, also the mitten book as I left mine at Jean's. Went to Girl's Friendly meeting where the Beach Soap Co. showed movies of South America & gave away Soapine. Awful smoky & had bad dizzy spell when I got home. They served refreshments.
Tuesday, November 27, 1945 (age 58): Fair & cool. Got one green mitten for Christine done. Letter of sympathy from Sec. of Navy James Forrestall. Reader's Digest. Sent off wheelbarrow to Butchy by express. Quite a lot of work at Press. Collins in. Sent Jean 2 pkgs of Ivory Snow that Lucy got me. Got 2 yarn holders at Yarn Shop & ball of silver twine at bookstore. Got my tablet prescription filled again & bought a dickie & blouse for Mary.
Wednesday, November 28, 1945 (age 58): Clouding up. No mail except an ad. Got one mitten done & started on next and then we played cards. Wind started to blow at night & it was raining before morning.
Thursday, November 29, 1945 (age 58): Rain & snow-- a blizzard as it blew so hard & the snow stung. Letter & card from Jean. Bought book for Christine. Stevenson's poems with photographs for illustrations. Paid Betty Cole for the express as she took it out of cash in Bookstore. Got mittens done for Chris. green. Packed box for Mary. Was going to church to hear Mira Wilson, but it was too stormy. George went down. Not much pay this week & a lot out for dues. $7.51.
Friday, November 30, 1945 (age 58): Snow & rain. Snow piled up like last Feb. I wrote to Jerry I wouldn't be in unless it cleared. Quite busy folding & reading proof. Bought some gumdrops to fill lantern for Butchy & put in the rest in a box. Tied up box & it fits perfectly-- I mean the things which go in it. Started another pair of mittens.
Saturday, December 1, 1945 (age 58): Cleared of snow & warmer so snow melted some. Roads plowed but sidewalks not. Went to union meeting in Law. & got all stuck up with tobacco smoke. Came out at 4.30. Couldn't get saccharine as everyone wants it. There wasn't any baked bean supper at Baptist so I met George & Nellie coming down so I told them. N. had to do some shopping however. Fred Morrison came in & told what he knew of the Franklin. It was much as he was trapped & didn't see the explosions, but heard them. Carl Lindsay died.
Sunday, December 2, 1945 (age 58): Clear-- not very cold. Bad walking but I went to church, helping Lucy down to the South. Stayed in in the afternoon & made another mitten. Wrote to Jean, Jerry, Mr. Henry, Miss Haviland & Ethel Harrington.
Monday, December 3, 1945 (age 58): Cloudy-- a little warmer. Tommy Eldred back at work. Young John Cole in being rather officious. Quite a lot of work. Bought 3 cans of soup & took down to church for sending off. Left it in kitchen. 12 years ago George Christie died.
Tuesday, December 4, 1945 (age 58): Cloudy but didn't rain during day. Quite a lot of work. Letter from Jean saying baby had fallen out of crib. Book-- Longfellow's Poems I sent for came. Bill for flowers for Allan's Mem $5. Finished the other pair of mittens. Bought 2 small footballs for Jane's boys.
Wednesday, December 5, 1945 (age 58): Rain-- Quite a lot of work but got pretty well caught up. Got some knitting started on another pair of mittens. Someone called up from the service men's club to find out Mary's address. Probably going to send her condolences. Abbie Burtt died at Baker Memorial. She had an operation on tumor in back last week, but I guess her heart gave out.
Thursday, December 6, 1945 (age 58): Rain. Went to shepherd's pie dinner at Free ch. Shepherds pie, cole slaw, rolls, coffee, gingerbread & whip cream. Got all my cards that are in my address book written. Got package done up for Mary with cloth in it & 2 footballs & mittens for Chris. Cloth from Jean. She said to send it there but I wrote I'd send it along. Letter from Jean Dundas with $2 for 2 pounds of Christmas candy if I can get any.
Friday, December 7, 1945 (age 58): 4 years ago Jap war started. Rain. Got galleys all read. Made up a little poem to go with Thelma's present-- 2 silver spoons. Got brush & comb set for John Allan & a bib holder. Also a spoon & fork for Janna. Was told no work Monday & Tuesday. Went to Thrift Shop & helped E. Hilton put away white shoes & get out shoe skates. got a bib apron for Carla & some clothes I had put away for Butchy. Abbie Burtt's funeral. Went in to see her this noon. Dot Edmands Kinville had another boy, Robert Wayne.
Saturday, December 8, 1945 (age 58): Fair. Sent another box to Mary with the cloth in it from Jean. No mail. Went downtown & sure was tired when I got home. Mailed all out-of-town cards. Started big mitten of yellow yarn.
Sunday, December 9, 1945 (age 58): Fair. Lovely day. Went to church. Lots of people out. Stayed home in pm & finished big mitten & made 2-year-old size for Carla. Finished those after I'd been to Christmas concert in Free churcch-- male choir & Calvary Baptist & Free Ch. choir. Very fine. Lucy & Nellie went but Nellie sat in the back so she could go out. Wrote to Jean & Mary. Sent Jean's off. Sent card & notice of Allan's memorial to Ellis & Annie.
Monday, December 10, 1945 (age 58): Cloudy & snow. Sent off box to Peggy also note. Sent letter to Mary & note to Janie about what I was sending to Janna. Waited till mailman came & he had a letter from Mary saying Janie & Fred up in Centralia so I changed the label on Janna's box & sent it there, also Janie's note. Mary wrote they had 10 adults & 9 children at Thanksgiving. Got package this pm with Butchy's swing & Chris's pencils in so I trudged down again with those. Went to Racket Store & had them send a clothes hamper out to Jean. Got $25 from bank & sent $5 each to Min, Virg & Eleanor. Cards from Winnie Burtt & Helen Higgins. Card from Dot about baby.
Tuesday, December 11, 1945 (age 58): Clear & a lot colder. Washed out stockings, fixed up some Andover Christmas cards & wrote to Mary. Went downtown & mailed them & went into Press & ordered a doz eggs. Louie back at work & wants me in tomorrow. Went over to Thelma's & saw her presents. She's got some nice ones. Got one blue baby mittens done for John Allan-- not enough yarn for the other. Had quite a time figuring it out. Started the second yellow mitten. No mail.
Wednesday, December 12, 1945 (age 58): Cold & clear. Letters from Mrs Preston saying John had died the day before Thanksgiving; card from Jean saying R. was sick. Xmas cards from Jean Dundas, Peggy & John & Carla. Worked & there was quite a little to do.
Thursday, December 13, 1945 (age 58): Cold-- Boiler on the blink again at Press. Jean sent letter with $10 in it; $5 for me & $5 to pay for cloth. Says J.A. can climb all around now. Got another yellow mitten done & fixed up box for Ruth. Bought blue & green yarn. Annie Donovan found dead at her home. She was going senile & had been at Greeley's market just the day before.
Friday, December 14, 1945 (age 58): Snow. Not deep but covered the ground. Letter from Jean. John Allan stands up & crawled over & pulled himself up as she was eating her lunch. Letter of sympathy from Mrs. Edith Noruse Rogers. Note from Miss Farmer. Christmas card of sympathy from Bea Poland. Note from Mrs. Gardner. Note from Mrs. Hamblin. Wrote to Jean Dundas. Sent $1 to Sonny & Christmas card to Lucie & Lester Hayward. Put handkerchief in card to Margaret. Did up Jean's presents. Got blouse for her & 2 handkerchiefs in Harborn shop for Roland. Mary Bancroft dropped dead in Boston.
Saturday, December 15, 1945 (age 58): Cloudy & cold. Went downtown in a.m. to mail package to Jean with R.'s pajamas & her waist in it. Got her some gloves & a belt in Irma Beene's. Mailed cards for Nellie. No mail for me. Mrs. Gilbert came to visit for the weekend. Made one blue mitten for Lucy. George had to stay down at church for a wedding-- Payne.
Sunday, December 16, 1945 (age 58): Clear-- a few clouds-- warmer. Looked like storm at noon but cleared. Beautiful moon. Went to church. Rev. Arnold spoke. Mailed Minnie V's card with money in it & Margaret H's with handkerchief. Lucy went to see Florence Scanlon this pm. Mrs. Gilbert left for the 6.22 train. I started another mitten.
Monday, December 17, 1945 (age 58): Fair & cold. Went to Legion Auxiliary supper & got a box of candy & a sprig of artificial holly tied with red white & blue ribbon. Turkey supper. Mrs John Cole sang afterwards & they played carols & talked. Didn't stay long. Got the mittens done & tied up for Lucy. Received several cards. Ruth said Miss Emily Richards died. Eric Cuthill also.
Tuesday, December 18, 1945 (age 58): Fair & cold. Total eclipse of moon & predictions of a storm. Had hair shampooed at Mrs. Addis' & Agnes Thin did it & when we were alone, as they go at 5.30 she told me a lot about her husband's goings-on. When I went to pay her, Mrs. Addis had left a card that it was given to me as a Gold Star Mother. I nearly cried. Wrote & thanked her. Also sent card to Agnes. Got more cards & a handkerchief from Mrs Meehan of Cumberland Mills.
Wednesday, December 19, 1945 (age 58): Snow-- The storm came & is still at it. Got home ok, but it's piling up. Got packages from Peggy, Ethel & Eleanor Tucker. Peggy's package smelled as it it was perfume & when I opened it the top was broken & all the perfume gone. My initials were on the bottle too--a shame. All the packing damp. Wrote Peg about it. Pkg. from Carla I didn't open.
Thursday, December 20, 1945 (age 58): Clear & cold. Lots of snow but it's pretty well plowed out. Lot more cards. Got oranges & grapefruit for Nellie's basket. Putting the big desk that was in the front office in my roo at Press so I'll have more room. Don't know how it will work. Card from John Allan awful cute-- baby with little birds in front of him.
Friday, December 21, 1945 (age 58): Clear & cold. Louie told me the Press was going to work Monday & Ruth had enough to do. It seemed so ridiculous to go down to Jean's for the weekend & come back but that's what I'm going to do. More cards. Nellie & George opened their presents, so I opened the one Nellie gave me-- an apron with some talcum powder & paper & envelopes from Lucy. I gave the basket of fruit to them & they seemed to like it & Lucy was tickled with her mittens. Took in Ruth's present & she gave me one.
Saturday, December 22, 1945 (age 58): Clear & cold. Went to Boston & to Portsmouth on the 12.30 train that gets there at 2--it was a little late as we were held up in North Hampton for quite a while. I don't know what for. Jean & Roland & the baby were there to meet me & then Jean did some shopping & Roland & the baby & I sat in car. Jean took him up to see Mrs Ailman too. He was good all the time & went to sleep coming home.
Sunday, December 23, 1945 (age 58): Clear & cold. Had to come back to go to work Monday. Took the 6.19 bus from York, a little late, just in time to get a bus to Boston. got off at Everett El. Station & just got a Haverhill bus home. The Maine Central bus was warm but the Haverhill bus was cold. Got home 9.30-- not so bad. Card from Mary and one from Mr & Mrs Morris from St. Pete saying they were so sorry to hear about Allan. Roland sick with grip. Stayed in bed all day.
Monday, December 24, 1945 (age 58): Clear & cold. Worked but got out at 4 & took the train to Rockingham & Jean met me. Had supper after we got home. Jean fixed the capon they got & had it all ready for Christmas. Had a new tree & it was a pretty one. Lots of presents.
Tuesday, December 25, 1945 (age 58): Birthday of Christ. Cloudy--looks like snow. Did spit snow a little & I thought I'd have to come home early-- but it cleared a little. Jean took me over to bus at York Corner and it came about 4.30. Got the Rockingham train & got home about 7.30. Called up Mr. Markert & asked if he would tell Lucy at Mrs Morse's I was home which he did so she came along in about half an hour & showed me her gifts. My gifts were bed jacket-Jean, slippers Roland, pictures of John Allan, pill box from Carla, perfume (broke) from Peggy, flower pin Ethel, perfume Ruth, Nat. Geographic Virginia, Readers Digest Minerva, case for bills to put in pocketbook Eleanor, handkerchief Mrs Meehan, gloves Jerry, notepaper Lucy, talcum powder from Nellie & apron, note paper from Margaret,
Wednesday, December 26, 1945 (age 58): Rain cleared off snow. Warmer & clear in pm. Margaret gave me back the check I had given to Miss Berry saying it wasn't good after 6 months & she thought I meant there wasn't funds-- that's a laugh. 40 cent check. Got card from Mrs. Hawes. Wrote some New Year's cards to people I forgot at Christmas.
Thursday, December 27, 1945 (age 58): Fair. Streets cleared of snow all ready for another storm. Lucy came home looking white & didn't eat any supper. Threw up several times & once after she went to bed. Said she didn't have a headache & thought her stomach was tired.
Friday, December 28, 1945 (age 58): Fair. Didn't need rubbers. Hap out sick so casters not running. Ruth did quite a lot of setting though. I read some press proofs. Folded some. Went to Thrift Shop at night & gave the check for 40¢ to Eliz. Hilton & told her what Mrs. Berry said. She was disgusted. Letters from Dorothy & Jean.
Saturday, December 29, 1945 (age 58): Snowing hard. Went downtown this a.m. & took blouse skirt & dresses to be cleaned. Got doughnuts & rolls for Nellie. Cleared out old trunk & threw away 1944 Christmas cards & some old bills. Found Allan's insurance policy which I will send out to Mary. Hung John Allan's picture up over desk. Lay down after dinner & felt kind of miserable when I got up. Ate supper but shouldn't as I felt squeamish all evening.
Sunday, December 30, 1945 (age 58): Warmer & snow melting. Stayed in bed most all day. Feverish & achy. Had tea & toast to eat. Wrote Jean & Dot. Lucy didn't go to church either.
Monday, December 31, 1945 (age 58): Cloudy & raining some. Streets all slush. Fever gone but still ache so didn't go to work. Ruth called up at night & George answered & said I was sick. Felt a little better & played rummy. Couldn't sleep so really did see New Year in. Glad I don't have to go to work tomorrow.
