See the diary entries for 1942. (Unfortunately, the 1943 diary is missing, but there is, following, a 1943 overview before the 1944 overview.)

Note 1: The 1944 diary is a small tablet, with very little room for each day's events. Many of the events are written in after two or three (or more) days' reflection, and sometimes events are recorded on days other than than when they occurred.

Note 2: The last two days of 1943 are at the beginning of this diary. The diarist, Mary Caroline Findley Edmands has since October been living in California; she moved from her Massachusetts home, intending to be close to her two sons and their families. Here is a picture of Mary with her two sons, Allan and John, and her granddaughter Chris taken in Long Beach at Christmas, 5 days before these entries begin. Here is another picture taken the same day of Mary, her son Allan, her granddaughter Chris, and her grandson Butchy. During her California stay, she will be relied on to be a babysitter, sometimes with Chris, sometimes with Butchy, sometimes with both, seldom without either.
