1937 Overview (age 50 from March 16): After two months in California visiting son Allan Christie Edmands I, 26, in Long Beach, CA, at Cedar and 3rd Streets, returned by train through the Southwest to El Paso and then up through Chicago. Still rooming at George and Nellie Carter's (Wolcott Avenue in Andover), while Farraghers continued renting Mary's mortgaged house on Carmel Road. Allan was married that year in San Diego, San Diego County, California, to Mary Anna Hawes, 20, daughter of Frederick Wilson Hawes and Anna Martha Franz Hawes of Centralia, Lewis County, Washington. Son Ernest John Edmands, 20, took entrance exams aboard the U.S.S. Utah and was admitted to the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland. Louie Paine was Mary's nemesis at the Andover Press: (19 August) "Snapped at Louie. He's about as tactful as a clam. I wish something would happen to him so I'd never have to be near him again. He just makes me ugly." (8 September, after short vacation) "Back to work. Louie very tactful, wanted to know if I went on a drunk. I said none of your business." Beau was still Jerry Sullivan. Niece Elizabeth C. Edmands Hatch, 45, daughter of brother-in-law Arthur Seymour Edmands and late sister-in-law Edith G. Mansfield Edmands, drowned in a swimming pool in Saugus, Essex County, Massachuesetts, while her third child, John T. Hatch, 12, was swimming in another part of the pool. 1937

BOY NEARBY AS MOTHER LOSES LIFE
Both in Pool; Child, 12, Fails to See Parent Struggling

SALEM, Aug. 15—While her 12-year-old son, John, completely unaware of the tragedy, was enjoying himself in another part of the pool, Mrs. Elizabeth M. Hatch, 50, of 121 Main Street, Saugus, was drowned in the Smith Memorial bathing pool this afternoon.

Through [words missing from torn clipping] neck of the [words missing from torn clipping] when [words missing from torn clipping] moved to Salem Hospital for [words missing from torn clipping] treatment, identification was made [words missing from torn clipping] Officer William H. O'Neil. An hour later, when all efforts to revive the woman had failed, a message was broadcast by loud speaker to other bathers at the pool, requesting any person residing at 121 Main Street, Saugus, to come forward.

John emerged from the section of the pool where children bathe and was told of his mother's death. Anthony Edmonds [this should be Arthur Seymour Edmands] of 131 Main street, Saugus, father of the victim, told police that Mrs. Hatch had been in good health up until a week ago, and although at that time she complained of pains about the heart, she did not consult a physician.

Seen Struggling in Water

Dr. Ignatius Zielinski, medical examiner, is considering the possibility that a heart attack was a contributory cause of death.
