| 1936 Overview (age 49 from March 16): Began keeping diary, recording events of each day for the rest of her life. Miss Ethel Howell, 48, best friend. Working for $28.42 per week as proofreader at the Andover Press (no paid vacations), which published the Andover Townsman and the Phillips Academy Bulletin (there was an attached bookstore as well). Beau was Jerry Sullivan. Had tumor removed. Was inoculated against typhus. Moved out of mortgaged Carmel Road house, renting it to Farraghers for $35 per month; moved into rented room at George and Nellie Carter's (both of them aged 60), Wolcott Avenue in Andover, paying between $5 and $7 a week for room and board. Voted for Alfred Landon for President and other Republicans for other offices. Traveled by train across continent (through "dust storm country" in Great Plains, wondering if Indians might attack) all the way to California to spend Christmas holidays and subsequent weeks with son Allan Christie Edmands I in Long Beach, CA, at Cedar and 3rd Streets. | 1936 |
Wednesday, January 1, 1936 (age 48): New Year's Day and am not feeling so hot. Will go to the doctor's. Dr. Blake advised Dr. Meigs of Boston and made a date for me to go to see him on Saturday.

Saturday, January 4, 1936 (age 48): I went into Boston and was examined by Dr. J. V. Meigs & found I had a tumor. He advised the Mass. Gen. hospital the sooner the better. So made arrangements to go on Wednesday Jan. 8.
Went to a show with Jerry at the Met.
Ethel went to Holden.
Sunday, January 5, 1936 (age 48): Went to church and took communion.
Monday, January 6, 1936 (age 48): Tried to get a loan to help me at the hospital from Merrimack Coop but nothing doing.
Tuesday, January 7, 1936 (age 48): Worked today & said goodbye to the Press gang. They all wished me luck.
Wednesday, January 8, 1936 (age 48): Went into the hospital. Was exam, by Dr. Warren there & answered all sorts of questions.
Thursday, January 9, 1936 (age 48): Watched another woman go to be operated day-- Felt as if I were going to Electric chair. Went down to op. room at 11.30. The sensation was awful but I guess I acted all right. Came out of ether at 2:30. Terribly thirsty and headache. Was also sick and lost so much liquid had to have some injected into my arm for 3 hrs. Gradually losing the awful sick feeling. Jerry & Mrs. Haviland came in. In Baker Meni. part of hospital. Got acquainted with Mrs. Nichols of North Easton. Telegram from Allan first message.
Friday, January 10, 1936 (age 48): No entry for today.
Saturday, January 11, 1936 (age 48): John Russell and Ruth Haviland in to see me. Feeling better. Flowers from Minerva. Magazines & fruit from John R. John Edmands came up from Newport on his leave after 12 weeks training.
Sunday, January 12, 1936 (age 48): Flowers from Mrs Edgar & Mrs Johnson. Jerry in to see me. Cards & flowers lovely.
Monday, January 13, 1936 (age 48): Went back to Gen. Hospital Ward 23. Flowers from Eleanor & Edwin. Letters from lots of people. Visits from Mr. Henry & Jean Donald came up.
Tuesday, January 14, 1936 (age 48): John came in to say goodbye as he leaves for Newport & then goes down the coast on Wed & so to the west coast. John Russell, Jerry, Mrs. H. all down in waiting room but didn't come u. J. Blackburn came in & Mr & Mrs Chruch. Flowers from them. Went to Belmont with Ruth.
Wednesday, January 15, 1936 (age 48): Everyone awfully kind. Breakfast in bed & don't have to do anything. Got up though & put on kimona.
Mrs. H. at home in morning & Dorothy gets home in the afternoon at 5 so I'm alone only a little while.
Lots of good eats.

Ruth Saunders came down to Belmont to see me. Got a bouquet from Press.

Sunday, January 19, 1936 (age 48): Blizzard sure enough but it didn't stop Jerry from coming out to Belmont. Thought I ought to go home when it cleared but they wouldn't hear to it.

Learned to play Monopoly.

Sunday, January 26, 1936 (age 48): Jerry came up but stayed only a short time. Feeling pretty good. Gave him my photograph I had taken for Christmas. Went to dinner at Mrs Johnson's across the street.
Monday, January 27, 1936 (age 48): Went out and was helped downtown by Mrs Edgar. Managed pretty well.
Tuesday, January 28, 1936 (age 48): Out again but knees feel like rubber. Queerest sensation. Am using Dad's cane. ["Dad" means her late husband.]
Wednesday, January 29, 1936 (age 48): Everyone I meet seems glad to see me and tells me to be careful.
Have paid a good many bills.

Got pretty tired but had a ride down & back.
Wednesday, February 5, 1936 (age 48): Am getting used to working again and although I get awfully tired I guess I'll make it.
Thursday, February 6, 1936 (age 48): Hap Harris has given me rides home several times and fills the oil can which helps a lot.
Work is starting up at the Press. Already the Legends of Welleley is in and partly read and some galleys of Mass. Technique are in & read. Town Report in and being set up and read.
Friday, February 7, 1936 (age 48): Borrowed $35 and paid rent.
Saturday, February 8, 1936 (age 48): Went to Lawrence. ½ ton coal. Had my hair washed at Miss Cullinane.

Tuesday, February 11, 1936 (age 48): Got cards & letters from John. Letter dated Feb 4 so he is in San Diego now. Was going through Panama canal when he wrote.
Wednesday, February 12, 1936 (age 48): Got letter from Allan saying he would be in Bremerton Washington when John arrived in Calif. Too bad for John for he was counting on seeing Allan.

Started to rain late at night.
Monday, February 17, 1936 (age 48): Called up Ruth H. about snow train trip but she wasn't in. Marion answered.
Awful walking to & from work.
I slipped on ice outside door & hurt end of spine.
Tuesday, February 18, 1936 (age 48): This brings the writing up to date. Mrs. Edgar wanted me to come over but I said I expected Ruth would call up.
Wednesday, February 19, 1936 (age 48): Ruth H. called up tonight just after I got in from the movies. Saw Magnificent Obsession. She said her mother probably couldn't get off on Sat so snow train trip off for us. Awfully cold and thought I'd freeze in bed. Fire low and went out the next day.
Thursday, February 20, 1936 (age 48): Had to build up the fire tonight and at last it was warm. Mrs. Edgar came over a minute to see if it's all right to have Margaret's beau stay here. Ordered more coal. A little warmer but nothing to brag about yet.
Friday, February 21, 1936 (age 48): Melted in streets today but colder tonight. However not so bad as it has been. Washed my hair.
Saturday, February 22, 1936 (age 48): Went to Boston & saw Follow the Fleet with Jerry. He came home with me. Margaret Edgar home for a week. Brought her boy friend along. He stayed over here as they didn't have room over there. Leo Allison killed when his car was forced off the road.
Sunday, February 23, 1936 (age 48): Went to church for the first time since the first Sunday in January. Seemed good. Hope I can go more. Alone the rest of the day. Had dinner at the restaurant.
Monday, February 24, 1936 (age 48): Got a letter from John today and he has been transferred to the U.S.S. Argonne at San Pedro, a supply ship. Great letter. Went to see Thanks a Million at the movies. Fred Allen & Richard Powell. A little warmer today.
Tuesday, February 25, 1936 (age 48): Got a letter from Jean. Feet hurt her. Wish she didn't have to work out. Bessie called up & said she called a week ago Sat. & where was I. In Lawrence I guess. Will have me to supper some time.
Wednesday, February 26, 1936 (age 48): Got a letter from Allan. He's on his way back from Bremerton so will see John soon probably.
Went to church Ash Wednesday Sermon on "Renew a right spirit within me." I need it.
Thursday, February 27, 1936 (age 48): Got a letter from Jerry. Made a mistake in the Taxpayers Association letter or rather let it go by-- two "the"s together. Felt like a nickel. These things are supposed to keep me humble. Eleanor & Marion [Ormsby] up in the evening.
Friday, February 28, 1936 (age 48): Letter from Minnie. Payday. Listened to radio. Bessie called up inviting me to supper tomorrow night. Colder tonight. Ruth Sanders on weekend trip to New York.
Saturday, February 29, 1936 (age 48): Another letter from John. He'd expected to see Allan on Thursday. Went to Lawrence. Miss Buchan & she paid for dinner & movies. Went to Bessie's to supper.
Sunday, March 1, 1936 (age 48): * Rev. Mr. Wilson died suddenly. Bill D. called me up about it & while telephoning Dino & his wife & little Donald came & took me for a ride in car. Went to their house for supper.
Monday, March 2, 1936 (age 48): Another letter from John and one from Jean. They want to know what I want for my birthday. Also one from Winnie Burtt with pretty cards & check for $5. She's in Florida too.
Tuesday, March 3, 1936 (age 48): Got a letter from Ruth Haviland. Heard that Alfred Harris had a nervous breakdown. Kenneth had to go home from Press. Took Hap to Waverley.
Went down to Dot's and played Monopoly. She's got an awfully cozy apartment.

Friday, March 6, 1936 (age 48): Went to the play Candlelight by the Adventurers Andover's dramatic organization. Very good. Went with Jarrett & Florence Blackburn & Bessie. Stayed to supper at Blackburns.
Ruth Sanders called to Boston by illness of her uncle George.
Saturday, March 7, 1936 (age 48): Went to Lawrence but didn't go to a show. Got a letter from Jean.
Sunday, March 8, 1936 (age 48): Did some cooking for a change. Made lemon pie, tarts and gingerbread.
Mrs Haviland, Ruth & Jerry came up. Invited Esther Bachelder over. Had a swell time. Cooking good. They brought up icecream & doughnuts Ethel Haviland made.
Monday, March 9, 1936 (age 48): Town meeting day. Didn't go but stayed in the office till Miss Farmer got back. Mrs Edgar called over tonight that she had been sick and so had Mrs. Low. I'm a great neighbor, didn't know anything about it.
Rained nearly all day.
Tuesday, March 10, 1936 (age 48): Got a letter from Jerry asking about my birthday. Went over to see Mrs. Edgar as she & Mrs Low had both been sick and I didn't know it.-- Still foggy
Wednesday, March 11, 1936 (age 48): Went to movies with Annie Bucham & she came up here and stayed over night.
Thursday, March 12, 1936 (age 48): Got a letter from Jean & one from Ethel today. Rained like fury part of the day. Cellar flooded at the Press. Firemen there to get it out.
Friday, March 13, 1936 (age 48): Got a letter from John & package of stockings from Allan & John & $2 in it. Had to send 2 prs back as they weren't big enough.
Saturday, March 14, 1936 (age 48): Went to Boston today & did some window shopping. Met Jerry & we went to the Metropolitan & saw Desire with Marlene Dietrich & Gary Cooper. -- Had supper at Childs. Gave me a package when I left him.-- Mrs Edgar must be papering her front room.
Sunday, March 15, 1936 (age 48): Opened package from Jerry -- Stockings -- so I've got enough for a while. Went to church & had dinner at the restaurant. Good steak dinner. Flooded down in the Shawsheen valley. Eleanor telephoned yesterday to ask if they could come up here-- but they didn't come-- must have gone down
Monday, March 16, 1936 (age 49): * Got birthday cards from Eleanor & Marion Ormsby. Went to Dr Blake's re neck which aches all the time. He gave me some pills which are aspirin I think. Helped a little.
Tuesday, March 17, 1936 (age 49): Got package from Jean with navy blue sweater suit in it. Had ordered one from the Harborn shop but cancelled it. Got cross and chain & gardenia. Letter from Ruth Haviland re snow train.
Wednesday, March 18, 1936 (age 49): Started raining again & flood conditions getting bad all over -- Shawsheen river backing up from overflow of Merrimack.
Thursday, March 19, 1936 (age 49): Eleanor Svenon telephoned re coming up -- House getting surrounded by water so whole family except Buster came up.
Got telephone from R. Haviland but I guess there's no snow train this week.
Friday, March 20, 1936 (age 49): Townsman printed by hand -- Hard job. No power. Went to see flood over Main Street from Shawsheen P.O. to Marland Mills -- Houses under to 2nd story. No lights so used candles.
Saturday, March 21, 1936 (age 49): Went to Boston -- Saw Trail of Lonesome Pine at Met. Paul Lukas in person. Went to Havilands & stayed over night. Had to use candles here again.
Sunday, March 22, 1936 (age 49): Went to Waltham & saw Rose Maire in movie -- First time I ever went to a movie on Sunday -- Ruth & Mrs H. took me & drove me home afterwards. Tel. to L. Paine & found out the power was on again so had to come to work.
Monday, March 23, 1936 (age 49): Letters from Jean and Allan. Went to Dr. Simpson & he gave me an electrical treatment for my lame shoulder. My end of spine still hurts.
Tuesday, March 24, 1936 (age 49): Got inoculated for typhoid today.
Wednesday, March 25, 1936 (age 49): Arm sore but no other bad effects.
Eleanor got a letter with $2 in it from R. Haviland for the baby-- Card sent to baby.
Thursday, March 26, 1936 (age 49): Sick as could be at night-- high fever-- couldn't sleep.

Friday, March 27, 1936 (age 49): Felt miserable all day and sick again with fever at night-- Others didn't suffer so much from it. ¼ hr extra work.
Got ½ ton of coke-- Hope I won't have to buy any more.
Saturday, March 28, 1936 (age 49): Feel a little better today but not well enough to go to work. Went to Lawrence to pay on loan though. Had my hair washed as I felt too miserable to do it.
Sunday, March 29, 1936 (age 49): Stayed in bed this a.m. Called up Dr. Blake & he said not to be inoc again until Tues. Eleanor got it again today.
Ethel Howell came over-- was here just for the day. Got her spring coat.

Thursday, April 9, 1936 (age 49): Worked three hours over time-- Went to church to Maundy Thurs. service. Gave a little bag to Peggy Blackburn.
Friday, April 10, 1936 (age 49): Worked ½ hr overtime. Got new hat & shoes.
Saturday, April 11, 1936 (age 49): Went to Boston & bought a grey coat in Conrad's basement.
Buster came down with the mumps.
Sunday, April 12, 1936 (age 49): Went to church in Haverhill & saw G. Brown. He seemed glad to see me but was busy as usual. Music good & fine sermon.
Monday, April 13, 1936 (age 49): Got a telegram from Jean wanting her midship. hat sent to her. Worked an hour extra.

Wednesday, April 15, 1936 (age 49): Got letter from John and he has to be mess cook & is trying for signal man.
Went to Boston to see Dr Meigs & he said I was getting along fine. Got a prescription which will cost plenty.
Saw Mrs. Haviland @ Berkeley station. Rain rain rain.

Saturday, April 18, 1936 (age 49): Worked this pm until 3 oclock. Went to Law & got sewing machine which had been fixed. The fellow drove me home & put sewing machine together. Bought some silk & a pattern at Hillers for a blouse.
Sunday, April 19, 1936 (age 49): Tried out machine and it works pretty good but the bobbin isn't right yet. Made a blouse. Didn't go out all day. Margaret E. was home with her boy friend.-- Took out marriage intentions.
Monday, April 20, 1936 (age 49): Went to Boston in p.m. wore new coat hat & shoes. Walked along the Esplinade with Jerry, then show at Met. and steak dinner. Shoes made blisters on top of feet where the holes come. Margaret Edgar engaged. Got letters from Ruth H. & Jean.

Monday, April 27, 1936 (age 49): Got a letter from Allan with a lot of pictures in it.
Worked until 7.30 & then went to movies.
Alfred Harris came back to work but looks punk.
Tuesday, April 28, 1936 (age 49): Worked until 7 oclock or so. Got pretty near through the Hub.
Got medicine which cost $10-- 30 pills-- 1 a day.
Wednesday, April 29, 1936 (age 49): Worked till 6.20
Mrs. Edgar came over. She asked about price of wedding invitations & I told her wrong. Thought they would be about $4 but Blackie said about $15. She can get them for about $9 in Law.
Thursday, April 30, 1936 (age 49): Jean & Roland came home today. Roland not feeling at all well. Got Buddy from Eva's & he was glad to see them. So was I, strange as it may seem. Worked till about 7.
Been hot for 2 or 3 days. Got letter from Buzz Paton & pictures.
Friday, May 1, 1936 (age 49): Still hot-- Roland went to see Dr. Dearborn. Stomach ulcers. Went to bed & has special diet.
Worked till 7.45.
Saturday, May 2, 1936 (age 49): Worked this pm. till about 3. Went to Law & ordered a kitchen linoleum.

Sunday, May 10, 1936 (age 49): Mother's Day. Got 2 doz carnations in mem of my mother and Susie for decorations for Free church. Doris said they looked nice and were in two bunches one on each side of pulpit
Monday, May 11, 1936 (age 49): Went to movies but didn't care for picture. Didn't have to work after 5 oclock. No one got the movie bank money so it's $150 next week.
Tuesday, May 12, 1936 (age 49): Went over to Glennie's with Jean & Roland & got icecream. Eleanor & Fred came up later.
Wednesday, May 13, 1936 (age 49): Got letter from Jerry and one from Virginia. Busy at Press but didn't have to work overtime. Smaller books in now.

Friday, May 15, 1936 (age 49): Went to sleight of hand performance at Geo Wash hall with Jean. Pretty clever.

Saturday, May 16, 1936 (age 49): Went to Boston & to the Arboretum with Jerry. Lilacs & azaleas very lovely. Got Margaret Edgar's wedding invitation.
Sunday, May 17, 1936 (age 49): The Blackburns were up to tea. Talked about hiring house. Ethel Howell over in evening & was called home to put Miss Butterfield to bed as she had another shock. She died later or early Monday morning.
Monday, May 18, 1936 (age 49): Worked 3 hrs overtime. Got card from John saying he was operated on the 8th for append. Also got letter from Allan who evidently didn't know about it from Balboa. John must have been oper. on board ship going to Panama.

Friday, May 22, 1936 (age 49): Same today. This is the baby's [Frances Caroline Edmands, born 22 May 1919, died 24 May 1919] 17th birthday. Wish she were here. Would probably be graduating from high school this year if she had lived.

Saturday, May 23, 1936 (age 49): Worked all day or till about 3.30. Jerry came up & stayed during the evening. Jean was at a food sale some of the day. Went down to cemetery & found stones hadn't been put up. Found out have to pay for foundation first.
Sunday, May 24, 1936 (age 49): Had to work most of the day. Hot but cooled off late in the evening.
Monday, May 25, 1936 (age 49): Figured up pay for last week & I got 26 hrs. overtime & the pay will be $60.12 which is pretty good I think.
Worked 2½ hrs over tonight.

Wednesday, May 27, 1936 (age 49): Worked 3 hrs overtime. This is Virginia's birthday. I sent her some printed stationery with her name on it. Don't know when she got it as it was sent from the place they print it.

Monday, June 22, 1936 (age 49): Came home. Paul drove me to Stamford, Ct. so I didn't have to go to the city. Came back by the Shoreline & got to Boston about 2 oclock. Went down to the harbor to Nantasket & the sky & water were clear as crystal. Could see miles.
Tuesday, June 23, 1936 (age 49): Overslept-- 20 minutes late. Rather busy today at work. Shirley Barnard came up with a young couple to look at the house. Went over to Mrs. Edgar's.

Monday, June 29, 1936 (age 49): Mr. Cobb was coming to Boston so brought me home. As Jean paid my board there, I had a pretty fine weekend for almost nothing.

Very pleasant. After dinner took another walk to other side of shore line. Bus hr. late in Boston as traffic was heavy.

Monday, October 12, 1936 (age 49): Started out to be a nice day but it's blowing a gale now and cloudy. Going to be colder. Went over to Eva's & Ethel & I took a walk up Summer st. past Downings. Mrs. Carter had me to dinner. Hash was awfully good.

Friday, October 16, 1936 (age 49): New Townsman came out today. Looks pretty good. Annie Buchan wanted me to stay with her for a few days as her brother went away.
Saturday, October 17, 1936 (age 49): Rained cats & dogs. Army game with Harvard. Hoped to go in & see them march but didn't. Went to Law & had hair washed again. Had eyes tested for glasses.

Monday, October 19, 1936 (age 49): Dad dead 8 years. ["Dad" means her late husband.] Warm weather. Went to movies with Annie.

Wednesday, October 21, 1936 (age 49): Went to Salem Willows with A. Lindsay, A. Bucham & E. Hitchcock. Played whist at Ethel's after we got back.

Sunday, November 1, 1936 (age 49): Jean had sore throat but went down to Eleanor's for dinner. I went up to Open Door. Ethel came over in p.m. & I walked over with her & brought Jean back some icecream.
Monday, November 2, 1936 (age 49): Jean stayed in bed part of day but got up towards night. Mrs. Andrews & Roland came. Had supper at Open Door. Mrs. Andrews had my bed & I went up in attic. J.& R. up at Johnsons. Got Navy checks.

Jean & Mrs. Andrews started for Florida & Roland with another party.

Letter from Allan & Virginia. V. hurt by fall in hospital a week. Better now but not able to lift anything.

Saturday, November 28, 1936 (age 49): Went to Boston & saw Jerry. Went to Jordan's & saw toys & then to a show at the Boston, one a Navy picture. Had supper & came home.

Wednesday, December 2, 1936 (age 49): Letter from R. Haviland wants me to come out Sunday. Gang is going to be there. Check from Allan. Wrote to John, Ruth, Allan & Jerry. Paid bill at B & McNally's & told them about house heater.
Thursday, December 3, 1936 (age 49): Went down to Hiltons to whist party-- Got prize of a pair of salts & peppers, gave to Mrs. Carter. Also won 1 game of beano.

Friday, December 4, 1936 (age 49): Paid Buxton & $5 on funeral bill. Ethel paid back $20. Paid Miss Beane's bill & had B & McN. bill receipted. Letter re merging the two mortgages from Rogers.
Saturday, December 5, 1936 (age 49): Went over about the merging of the two mortgages then met Ethel & we walked up & down Essex street looking for a hat for her. Finally found one in a yarn shop.
Sunday, December 6, 1936 (age 49): Went to Law. & had cysts taken off my eyelids. Then went to Belmont & had a party at Havilands. McNears, Jerry, Esther Bat. & H. Leck there-- They gave me a travelling case.
Monday, December 7, 1936 (age 49): Worked today although the girls didn't. Had a letter from John wanting $10.
Tuesday, December 8, 1936 (age 49): Had another letter from John wanting $15 but I think I'll send him ten & a box of things. Called on Edgars & Johnsons & bid them goodbye.
Wednesday, December 9, 1936 (age 49): Sent the $15 to John after all. Got letter from Jean. Went to Doris to party. All the Press "girls" gave me a surprise. Lovely bag & gloves.
Thursday, December 10, 1936 (age 49): Another letter from Jean. Sell stove oil burner to D. Black. Jean sending me a toilet case hasn't got here yet. Rain rain rain. Went & bade F. Blackburn goodbye after supper at Edgars.
Friday, December 11, 1936 (age 49): Last day of work this year. Supper at Carters & went down to Eleanor's-- She gave manicure set. Doris travel book, Ruth stockings, pkg from Jerry, book from Hap. Everyone wished me luck.
Saturday, December 12, 1936 (age 49): Started for California. Got pkg from Jerry before I left. Ethel Howell & Ruth Haviland saw me off in Boston. Had to change in Troy & Albany station for Chicago, 10.10 oc.
Flatland all through Ohio.
Sunday, December 13, 1936 (age 49): Got to Chicago all right. Had to change stations. Went into woman's room & took a bath 25 cents & lay down & had a snooze. Called up Mrs. Alley at Wilmette and talked with her for about ten minutes.
Monday, December 14, 1936 (age 49): Got into Omaha-- quite a railroad station-- just crossed the Missouri river. Met some nice people on train. Ride across Nebraska almost straight with boulevard right side. Went through the dust storm country. Cattle don't look so bad though.
Tuesday, December 15, 1936 (age 49): Got to Ogden. Had a wait of about an hour & half for the train for Dillon. 325 miles through, first by part of the salt lake & then the flatlands of sage brush-- can see for miles and miles. Mountains sawtooth out of Ogden. Got to Minnie's 7.02 was met by Ralph, Minnie & Mary. Saw Philip later.
Wednesday, December 16, 1936 (age 49): Went up to Bannock, the first capital of Montana, now just an almost abandoned mining town. Saw the old jail & site of executive mansion. Mountain roads wind for miles & the moountains are huge. Met Mrs Nay, Mrs Williamson & Mrs Sutherland, Rhea & Butte Meade.
Thursday, December 17, 1936 (age 49): Minnie took me around Dillon & saw the principal things. Had supper at church and then left for L.A. at 8.30 pm.
Friday, December 18, 1936 (age 49): Arrived in Salt Lake and took bus ride around city seeing principal points of interest. Left in the morn for L.A. riding all day & night.
Saturday, December 19, 1936 (age 49): Arrived here at 8.35 a.m. Wandered around looking for someone to pick me up. At last found Levernes who knew me on acct of prominent chin & came to this apt. house where there is everything for home in 1 room & kitchenette. Letter from Jean with snaps in it when I arrived. Allan & I visited shops. Sent John a box of candy.
Sunday, December 20, 1936 (age 49): Went to San Diego & into Mexico with the Levernes. Wonderful Cord car. Went all along the shore & it was grand. Saw Jim & Jessie May.
Monday, December 21, 1936 (age 49): Shopped around in the stores & went down to Navy landing, but not over to battleship as we had to wait too long. Went to movies at night. Saw Green Pastures & pictures of the Army-Navy game in the news.
Tuesday, December 22, 1936 (age 49): Went to the market--farmer to consumer. Everything so cheap. Went around stores again & had a shampoo & wave. A. went over to battleship & got some clothes. In the evening Mr & Mrs Johnstone called-- Mieke's uncle & aunt. Got a little Christmas tree.
Wednesday, December 23, 1936 (age 49): Went to the stores with Frances & Mrs L. Allan carried home a Christmas tree for them. Went to movie in afternoon. Winterset & Daniel Boone.
Thursday, December 24, 1936 (age 49): Went to market in the morning and stayed around the rest of the day. Tried to find the Episcopal church but it's too far away. Had a good walk though.
Friday, December 25, 1936 (age 49): Ate dinner at the Mission cafe. Turkey & all the fixings. Then went to band concert and movies. Saw Stowaway & In His Steps. Mike & his girl came in evening. Called up Annie Coleman McCrone.
Also saw fleet from Palos Verdes hills in morning. Great day.
Saturday, December 26, 1936 (age 49): Went to market before Allan was up. Had breakfast at the coffee shop. Went around stores. In the evening went over to Mike's place.

Sunday, December 27, 1936 (age 49): Rained so didn't go to Mojave desert as planned. Ate turkey with the Levernes. Allan back on duty.
Monday, December 28, 1936 (age 49): Allan came home in p.m. Christmas cards from Miss Farmer, B. Sheridan & my social security act number from the A.P. Got card out from library here & took books out.
Tuesday, December 29, 1936 (age 49): Went downtown & to a show in pm then to a restaurant to supper. Alone all day. Townsman & letter from Lizzie Scott.
Wednesday, December 30, 1936 (age 49): Rained all day so stayed in. Allan home. Got letter from Minnie & Mary Liggett. Did some ironing.
Thursday, December 31, 1936 (age 49): Allan had duty so didn't go anywhere. Lots of noise at midnight. Went to movie & had a good book. Have seen Old Hutch, Rainbow on the River etc. at movies.
