Age 27: Still living in homestead stone cabin in North Reading, Middlesex County, Massachusetts. A doctor informed husband, Ernest Carl Edmands, 30, that, because of his problem kidneys, he wouldn't live more than 15 more years. When the doctor informed Mary, Ernest threw his medicines away in anger. Brother-in-law Nelson Wilfred Edmands, 39, married Alice E. He was not drafted because of a persistent ankle injury from high school football days and because he had three children. Brother, John Arthur Findley, 37, acting as assistant to the U.S. Consul, married to a French woman in LeHavre. Nephew Wilfred S. Age 31: Ernest working as groundskeeper at Abbot Academy; the family lived in a rat-infested tenement at the academy. Niece born, daughter of brother, John Arthur Findley, 38, and his French wife in LeHavre, but she died soon after, because of the unavailability of medical care. Annette C. Age 32: Because of pregnancy, ousted from tenement in Andover, Essex County, Massachusetts, so moved to Ballardvale in South Andover. Daughter Frances Caroline Edmands born (as part of the Greatest Generation) in Anderson Sanitorium on Maple Avenue in Andover with lots of red hair, but she died two days later. 1919
Age 33: Husband, Ernest Carl Edmands, 36, suffered colitis and a ruptured ulcer, and nearly died. Had to work to support family, making doughnuts at home and selling them to a store for 25 cents a dozen. Sons, Allan Christie Edmands I, 9, and Ernest John Edmands, 3, sent to live with their Uncle Ellis (Ernest's half brother Ellis Lincoln Edmands) and Aunt Annie on their farm near Rochester, Vermont. Father-in-law Artemas Seymour Edmands died of chronic endocarditis in Saugus, Essex County, Massachusetts, at the age of 83 years 9 months 16 days. Anthony E. Hatch, son of niece Elizabeth C. Age 37: Husband, Ernest Carl Edmands, 40, used the inheritance from his parents' death to have a house built for them on Carmel Road in Andover, Essex County, Massachusetts. They moved into the house this year. Ernest was recovered from his bleeding ulcers sufficiently to find work as a surveyor and draftsman for the New York, New Haven, and Hartford Railway. Sons, Allan Christie Edmands I, 13, and Ernest John Edmands, 7, returned home from Vermont. Sister-in-law Alice E. Blaney Edmands, wife of brother-in-law Nelson Wilfred Edmands, died in Saugus, Essex County, Massachusetts, at the age of 37. 1924

Age 40: Husband, Ernest Carl Edmands, 43, too sick to work, so Mary resumed work at the Andover Press, this time as a proofreader, to pay bills (got job through influence of family friend George Allan Christie, 58). Niece Margaret Louise Edmands, daughter of brother-in-law Ellis Lincoln Edmands and his first wife, the late Emeline Ferris Laurence Edmands, died at the age of 20. John "Jack" Russell and JoAn Russell, twin children of niece Minerva Ramsdell Russell, 21 (daughter of sister, Susie Catherine Findley Ramsdell and brother-in-law Harry A. ("H.A.") Ramsdell) and her husband, John Russell, born. 1927
