1940 Overview (age 53 from March 16): In hospital for short spell with flu. Moved to 34 Chestnut St. in Andover, renting from Sweeney's. Visited both sons, Allan Christie Edmands I, 29, and Ernest John Edmands, 23, in Pensacola, FL; Allan's wife, Mary Anna Hawes Edmands, 23, and daughter, Mary Christine "Chris" Edmands, 2, were there as well. Niece Dorothy May (Dot) Edmands, 19, daughter of brother-in-law Nelson Wilfred Edmands and late sister-in-law Alice E. Blaney Edmands, married Ronald George Kinville. 1940

Monday, January 1, 1940 (age 52): John left Boston at 7.30 and got to Annapolis at 6 oclock. Jean & Roland & I had dinner at Manse & then they left for the beach. Movies-- Elizabeth & Essex. Mrs. Kibbee of B.V. [Ballardvale] got money $75 but $50 wasn't claimed.

Thursday, January 4, 1940 (age 52): Letter from Mrs. Oreston, said Mrs. Scholbred's mother was dead.

Friday, January 5, 1940 (age 52): Snowed a little. Letter from Mrs Johnstone out in California. Also from Jean. One from Gladys Bates Morton about how to get into the N.A.

Saturday, January 6, 1940 (age 52): Still cold. Letter from Virginia. Went to Boston, paid $7 on coat & bought new corsets. What a crowd at Loews theatre for Gone with the Wind.

Sunday, January 7, 1940 (age 52): Went to church. Dinner at Carters. Nellie & I went to visit Miss Farmer & Lucy afterwards. Heard Ethel Hitchcock had been sick.

Monday, January 8, 1940 (age 52): Didn't have to work so went to movies in pm. the money went to John Hancock & a woman. Got a letter from John saying he was glad I approved of Helen. Bought green dress at Harborn shop.

Tuesday, January 9, 1940 (age 52): No mail. Still cold. Longest cold spell for some time.

Wednesday, January 10, 1940 (age 52): Went up to see Ethel Hitchcock & found her better but still not feeling any too well. Letter from Jean who has a cold.

Thursday, January 11, 1940 (age 52): Turned ankle coming out of Ethel's walk and foot still aches.

Friday, January 12, 1940 (age 52): Got our bonus slips today & I was only overpaid $35. Ruth got a $2 bonus.

Saturday, January 13, 1940 (age 52): Went to Lawrence & saw Swanee River with Annie Buchan. Been cloudy & spitting snow all week.

Sunday, January 14, 1940 (age 52): Went to church. Mrs. Gilbert who has been visiting the Carters over the weekend went home so had dinner with Nellie. Went over to Ethel's for supper. Sleet & rain.

Monday, January 15, 1940 (age 52): Cleared up after raining all night & streets pretty clear. Letter from Jean saying the waves were high down at the beach. She sent up a dollar for her insurance. Nellie had doctor for her throat & stomach. She didn't go to the Free ch. supper but Geo did. I got medicine for Nellie.

Thursday, January 18, 1940 (age 52): Sent Roland a birthday card with $1 in it.

Friday, January 19, 1940 (age 52): Fixed up income tax blank. Owe govt. $10. A gyp. Church supper. Saw Cat & Canary at movies.

Saturday, January 20, 1940 (age 52): Mrs. Martin Sawyer died. Saw Sonja Hinie at Capitol with Annie Buchan.

Sunday, January 21, 1940 (age 52): Went to church. Still cold. Nellie feeling better but still didn't feel like going out.

Monday, January 22, 1940 (age 52): Dividend on insurance for Jean & John. Roland's birthday. Sent him a dollar in a birthday card.

Tuesday, January 23, 1940 (age 52): Carters out to supper with Duncans. I went down to the Woman's Auxilary meeting & addressed cards for the supper Feb. 6.

Wednesday, January 24, 1940 (age 52): Met Bessie & she wanted to know why I hadn't been in.

Thursday, January 25, 1940 (age 52): Letters from Jean twice this week.

Friday, January 26, 1940 (age 52): Didn't have to work in p.m. so had hair washed. * Mrs. Knipe died.

Saturday, January 27, 1940 (age 52): Went to Boston & saw Mrs MacNear & we had lunch at Hi-da-way. Saw Mrs Haviland.

Sunday, January 28, 1940 (age 52): Nellie's birthday. Gave her some dish towels & a card. We went to the Manse to dinner.

Monday, January 29, 1940 (age 52): Went to movies and felt cold starting. Thought I could throw it off but I didn't.

Tuesday, January 30, 1940 (age 52): Went to work but felt miserable all day. Got dizzy spells so decided I'd stay home.

Wednesday, January 31, 1940 (age 52): Drank orange juice and ate tangerines. Didn't feel much better so had the doctor this afternoon & as I belong to the Blue Cross went over to hospital.

Friday, February 2, 1940 (age 52): Took along some pills and went to bed. A Miss Mason from West Boxford came in for a slight operation.

Saturday, February 3, 1940 (age 52): Got card from Geo. Carney. Mr. Morris came in to see me.

Sunday, February 4, 1940 (age 52): Jean & Roland came up from beach & were thunderstruck to see me in hospital. Jean going down to Florida for 3 mos. Letter from John & he passed his exams.

Monday, February 5, 1940 (age 52): Came home from hospital with Dr. Blake. Steve Christie has 2nd son. Dr. Blake attending.

Tuesday, February 6, 1940 (age 52): Thought I might go to work but didn't feel able. Ruth Saunders called up & I said I might do some proofreading at home, so they sent some up.

Thursday, February 8, 1940 (age 52): Went out for first time. Pretty weak. Eleanor & Janet came up for a few minutes.

Friday, February 9, 1940 (age 52): Mr. Morris called too. Went out today & had hair washed & a facial. Felt fine.

Saturday, February 10, 1940 (age 52): Rained & snowed, so didn't go out. Card from Jean.

Sunday, February 11, 1940 (age 52): Sloppy & wet out. Sun came out & wind blew the roads dry. Went for a short walk. Ethel & Bessie to see me.

Monday, February 12, 1940 (age 52): Worked during morning. Paid bank & Sears Roebuck in pm. Paid Mrs Flint a dollar for Jan. storage. Legs feel weak. Letters from Jean & John. Jean's is full of woe. She has a cold & the place isn't what she thought it would be. John passed but just.

Wednesday, February 14, 1940 (age 52): Worked till four oclock and it was snowing & blowing so came home. It was a mild night & the biggest storm in years. All roads blocked & no sidewalks in part of the town.

Friday, February 16, 1940 (age 52): Went to work but got out at 3 oclock. Letter from Minerva which I answered.

Tuesday, February 20, 1940 (age 52): Snow again & the walking is terrible. The plow doesn't do any good hardly on the sidewalk but the roads are bare. Cleared off today so that it was fine for the 50th anniversary party for Miss Farmer at Phil Cole's.

Wednesday, May 29, 1940 (age 53): Work at 9 oclock. We went down to the cemetery & Mrs Carter went along & then we took a pan of flowers up to Mama's grave in West Andover.

Thursday, May 30, 1940 (age 53): Beautiful day. Heard from John that he's passed with about an 80% average for the year.

Friday, May 31, 1940 (age 53): Rain again. Didn't have to work Memorial Day morning but worked until 9 oclock. Also on Friday rained hard all day.

Saturday, June 1, 1940 (age 53): Went to Lawrence but came right back--got some things for Nellie.

Sunday, June 2, 1940 (age 53): Got letter from Allan yesterday-- thinks he will be here about July 4. Went to Abbot baccalaureate.
